I was planning to submit an abstract proposal to speak at ACSM this year, but my review of the abstract and presentation requirements appears to be that they are looking only for GIS applications. Am I missing something? Whatever happened to the S in ACSM?

I thinks it's just a function of esri using the same abstract submission web portal for both the UC & the "Surveying" Summit
My suggestion is that you contact your NSPS Governor, or your Area Director.
Tony Clavell is your NSPS Governor jac@gpsman.com
Wayne Herbert is your NSPS Area Director waynehebert@chevrontexaco.com
Send one or both of them e-mails and they should be able to get the ball rolling in the right direction.
🙂
There's Another Thread Going On Around Here.......
............about "What to Expect at the 2011 Survey Summit".
My guess: Expect to be treated more like an afterthought than a partner, if this is any indication.
It's interesting that NSPS is having a hard time hanging with ACSM.....how are they ever going to be able to keep up with ESRI?
I was going to make my submittal, but noticed the same thing. They also dropped any remuneration for taking the time to prepare and present the session or workshop. If I pay to go, I'm not going to be presenting. I'll be attending. If I'm presenting, I'd like to be compensated by at least not having to pay to go.
Seems like ESRI has a completely different policy on presenters than ACSM has had. ACSM has always been (or at least tried to be) fair to their presenters.
I won't be submitting this year. That'll be the first year in the last six that I won't. Kind of disappointing. :o{

Speakers do get a $100 dollar break on the conference price.
A surveyors time can't be worth too much since apparently we're all out there doing 100 acre commercial ALTAs for a couple of grand. 🙁
ESRI has stricter paper/presentation requirements than ACSM and I believe they are driving the ACSM ship at least for the next couple of years when it comes to the national conference. ESRI is the big gorilla right now and ACSM is riding their shirt tails. Maybe ACSM can get some real surveyor participation for a conference in the middle of field season in a west coast city.
I am deeply disappointed in ACSM and the direction they are going and this year is the first year that I have not renewed my dues since ACSM problems in the late 80's. I will not renew until the NSPS issue is resolved.
I will continue to support my State organization in the mean time.

JB,
We'll cover your Conference cost anytime you want to schedule the Oregon conference again!!!!!!! We cover the cost of all the speakers and invited guests. Next year we will be having our conference in Portland March 21-23 2012.

I'd love nothing better than a return engagement to Oregon, Jared. They proved themselves to be an incredibly hospitable group and put on an amazing lineup of choices at their 2010 conference. Great time.

That would be awesome!

Goodies for him when he comes here too!!
I think the surveyor summit with ESRI will be beneficial to surveyors and GIS professionals. Both sides are equally excited about the collaboration.
Sorry to hear you are not paying your dues. Thats too bad. We are doing our best to make NSPS and ACSM the best organization it can be for the representation of its membership. To do that, we need input from the members. I understand that dissatisfaction always lead to consideration of canceling membership, but it is a very ineffective method for achieving change.
Stay a member and let us know how the new structure should be organized to best meet your expectations.
