My son is getting ready to graduate high school.
Last night he was awarded for being in the top ten of his senior class as well as the best overall student!
Yay for him. He sure earned it, staying up all hours of the night studying.
Of other interest, we had a student that was accepted to WestPoint Academy that received a $400,000 scholarship. Really un-believable considering how small our community is. He was 1 of 1200 that was accepted this year.

Besides his grades, he must have gotten a strong endorsement from your congressperson.
I had a cousin that was appointed to Annapolis. In the end, he wasn't an engineering type so
he transferred to Harvard after his plebe year. Graduated, Magnum cum laude with a degree in corporate law and eventually worked for RCA in the Manhattan entertainment division. When GE took over RCA, they could not afford his 'golden parachute' so they were 'stuck' with him until he decided to retire. The irony is that his son is getting ready to graduate from MIT.
Let me clarify - my son was not the one accepted to WestPoint. It was a classmate. Yes $400,000

Fortunately/unfortunately my son lacks the hardships necessary to receive many of the scholarships that are available. He was in the running for a full scholarship, but it was given to a different student.
Congrats to your son! My daughter was similar as far as scholarships - nothing for undergrad. She went to William & Mary and graduated #4 in her class there. This is when she got her reward - a full ride for a PhD in Biology at Cornell. So tell your son to keep up the good work.
Congrats to your son, and to you and those others around him that nudged him toward success. My son is graduating in June as well. Watching boy become man makes all the gray hair and nudging worth it.
I'll vouch for the $400K number, although it seems a bit light to me. My oldest daughter graduated from the Naval Academy Prep this month and has been awarded a nomination to the U.S. Naval Academy. Uncle Sam put the scholarship at $550,000.

As for myself, I was one of the top two students in my Second Grade class. Since there were only two of us I had to be in the top two for sure. I'm pretty sure I was number one.
Don't know about the above stated value of an U.S. military academy education, but I know the fact my brother's 2 sons education (one graduated from West Point, the other graduated from Annapolis) did not cost him one cent was important to my brother. So much so that he made them fully aware when they were beginning middle school that he wasn't paying for their college. My brother refused any help from our father for his college (thru Master degree), and he felt it important enough for his boys to experience doing the same. Don't remember so much about the Naval Academy, but the older boy Mike, who went to West Point came home and spent 2 weeks working with me after his sophomore year, and told me he would have enough money after his junior year to buy a new car. He (and others too) was actually paid by the Army to go to school, but they were not allowed to spend it until after the 3rd year. They were not allowed to have a car on campus until their Senior year, and with the forced savings would have enough funds. Pretty good deal for the "highly" motivated.

Dad graduated 8th grade at the top of his class...one room school house and he was the only one in 8th grade!
