We heard the noise at about 5:30 this morning. The picture is through the back door window taken at about 11:15 this morning. The origin of the downed tree is yet to be determined; it's not one of mine. It missed the east end of the house by maybe 5 feet.

Yesterday's high was 66, it's 33 now. We've had temperature drops like this many times, but the 50 mph winds were something new.

Here is another surprise.?ÿ Ice on US Highway 69 led to this trip down an embankment, across a ditch, into a parked vehicle with three occupants, crossing a city street and finally tearing into a house.

Apparently, people from Minnesota don't know how to drive on ice.

Dang! Ice on a highway just can't be dealt with. Snow, ok, but ice, stay home.

One of my favorite pastimes in the winter is watching news clips of folks on the freeways driving on ice.?ÿ If the video was from the Minneapolis-St. Paul area it's usually boring...if it's from the DFW metro it gets a lot more entertaining.

That's because any ice in Minnesota is beneath snowpack of two to twelve inches in depth.?ÿ Driving on snowpack is far easier than driving on ice.
