There are so many phrases that make no sense all by themselves.?ÿ But, someone coined the phrase to fit something at the time and they still are used by others.

Cool beans.

What for?

You know?

A cloud with a silver lining.

Dogging it.

Wasting daylight. or Burning daylight.

Nose to the grindstone.

Elbow grease.

Cat fur or Katfer.

Give me five.

Lowering the bar.

Raising heck.

Looking up (anything).

Shooting the moon.

Catching up.

Way better.

So what?

I think this phrase or question should have a comma as in "So, what?" That makes more sense.

lets shoot the bull.

Years ago, I was at my grandparents house which was an old farm house south of where I grew up. My grandpa was a farmer and they lived there for many years.?ÿ

This particular day, my brother was sitting on the steps leading into the kitchen talking to our grandpa. I (being 5 years younger than my brother) asked what they were doing. My grandpa responded, "just shooting the bull". I took it for what it was worth and went on my way.

A little while later I returned and again asked, "what are you doing now?"

My grandpa, without missing a beat, said, "now we're butchering it".?ÿ

I don't think I really got it then but I haven't forgotten that day and that was a LONG time ago.

A friend it Texas uses the term "Out of pocket" for when they will be out of cell service on otherwise unavailable. Huh?

She also says "hacks me off" when something makes her mad. I suspect there are many regional sayings or phrases that make no sense elsewhere. Maybe not even where they were originated.

When folks would use the phrase "pretty much" a mentor would say "oh, beautiful a lot, huh?"

One of my favorite odd responses came from a co-worker. When offered something to eat, he would respond "No thank you. Just had a bar of soap." Never asked him where he got it, but perhaps it goes back to getting one's mouth washed out with a bar of soap?
