Anybody know what the control code is for the degree symbol in MS word? Doing a FEMA Elev. certificate and the letter D doesn't look so good. I know in cad its %%d.

how do you enter that? When I hold down the alt key and hit the two button, a dropdown menu appears to "clear form field". what are the key strokes?

Find the insert symbol icon -- more symbols -- scroll down to the degree symbol and change the shortcut key. I changed mine to alt 2 4

What version are you using? I use 2007, and I can insert it by clicking the "Insert" tab, then click "Symbols".

Not sure, but I believe the "alt codes" only work on the numeric keypad? Someone correct me if I'm wrong...

Surv8r is correct. Use the number pad while holding the ALT key down.

Yes, I believe you have to use the keypad. So, while holding down the ALT button, type 248 and then release the ALT button and you should have yourself a merry little degree symbol.

°

EDIT: ha ha same thing Paul just said. 😀

Wow! Awesome! You are right, you can't use the numbers above the qwerty keys! Only the number pad works.
When using the FEMA form that I downloaded from FEMA, most of the top menu's and pull downs are greyed out (not available). I think that is to protect the form. I tried to use the insert button, but it does not work in the form.

This forum has solved yet another simple problem that could have wasted my whole morning trying to figure out otherwise!

Don't forget, you can customize the shortcut in the insert symbol dialog box.

I have mine set to "Ctrl D", a lot easier to type than the default.

Alt+0176 works also. °
I like it better because I can remember that Alt+0177 is the "more or less" ± symbol.

There are ways to "unprotect" the form. This has been discussed numerous times before.

From the "Insert" tab choose symbol. The Symbol box will pop up.

Find the Degree Sign. You can then click insert and it will insert it at the cursor point.

But, if you click the Shortcut Key button then you can assign it to a key combination. I use Alt+D.

° = ALT 248
± = ALT 241

Awhile back, I downloaded and used this macro program known as "HoeKey" (stupid name, I know). It worked really well, and it's free:

I've been typing these for so long I don't even think about the keystrokes...

Dan
The from I am using is protected. All of the boxes at the top are greyed out. Can't use that method in the new FEMA form. Don't know how to unlock it either?
