Once upon a time the line separating Central time from Mountain time ran through Dodge City, Kansas. The same city as featured in Gunsmoke.

At the east end of the historic Santa Fe Railroad Station were two huge sundials (ignore the 6-foot diameter in the attached story). One positioned to show Central time and one to show Mountain time.

Anyone know of a similar pair of sundials anywhere else in the US?

That’s some big ones. Gunsmoke was a childhood favorite. I still watch it today. About 10 years ago the wife and I were looking at some farm land that the road was named Dodge City road. She died when she had received the link from the realtor. We still kick ourselves today for not getting that land. We were just a bit gun shy lol. No puns intended so we hee hawed around to long and a developer grabbed it unfortunately.

I do plan on setting up a sundial not that big but a decent one on the new farm have a great place planned near the house and such. I have recently pulled my old notes and stuck them into my research folder for the boundary and such so all I need is a T-3 and a little practice again.

I've been curious for some time, if you don't mind my asking, how old are you?

Not a pair, but a good sized one outside the Sundial Rec Center in Sun City, the base is about 60' in diameter. We don't need to figure adjustments every six months because daylight savings is not observed in AZ, I just gotta keep remembering the time difference between her and NY and AK is what changes.

I sure wish they'd pick ONE time and leave it alone. Standard Time or Daylight Saving Time. I don't care which, just pick one.

Even easier and better would be to just split the difference, but somehow simple solutions like that routinely evade the feds.

I've lived in cities that were split by a state boundary which was a little weird, but putting a city on a time zone line seems 100 times more annoying. 😆

I was under 6 the first time we visited these sundials. Dad told me the sun rays bend along the time line so that both were correct. Had no idea he was making that up.

About a quarter mile to the northwest of the dials is a recreation of Front Street with entertainment and such. Ended up with a garter off of one of the dance hall gals in 1991 and drank some sarsaparilla. Not sure why the first "r" is silent.
