is having friends who deer hunt and need to empty their freezer to make room for this year's harvest.

One of my buddies just gave me a milk crate full of steaks, ground venison, 50/50 (venison&bacon) and a two types of sausage.

In these days of genetically engineered meat, fed genetically modified grain and pumped full of antibiotics, fattened on industrial-sized farms and shipped thousands of miles and packed in styrofoam & plastic; sure is good to eat some local, free-range food.

O gosh yes! We just got 2 hams and a shoulder smoked it, and then crock potted it, to slow cook it til tender. YUM!

THEN, the phone rang at 2:30 the other night. Somebody had hit a nice big doe, and left it, still alive on the side of the road. Well, she is in the refridg now!

Good for you.

Mule Deer can taste good and not to gamey if they haven't been eating a bunch of bitter brush or other bitter growth. Like my deer from the foothills or farmlands, much better tasting and you usually don't have to carry them out of a deep canyon. Also taste depends on the person gutting it out and how the meat is cared for. Now nothing about other species of Deer.
jud.

I pay more but almost all the beef and pork I buy is directly from the source, raised less than 20 miles from my house.

Well, I dont think it is better than deer hunting, but it helps that I married into a meat market in my little town of Marion- my wife's side of the family owns it- cant remember the last time I bought meat from a grocery store-
the pan(breakfast) sausage is so lean, i almost have to add oil when pan frying- never have to drain ground hamburger - 🙂

I thought you were going to say, "complaining about what Tim Milton posts" but deer meat is good. I always gut mine with a Boston Butt Pork roast.

No comparison whatsoever. Maybe mulies are more challenging for die hard hunters, but if you want meat on your table go with their little brother. Plus the meat is much better in both texture & flavor.
