Trust me, I don't keep up with the British royalty...but with all the hype on the news, I had a nagging question. What is their last name?

The Royal Name

now I know.

Actually, I think that the Saxe-Coburg und Gotha refers to the duchy, not the family. The title only dates from the 1840's.

House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha

Here, for example, is the full official title of Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha:

>We, Ernst, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, Jülich, Cleves and Berg, also Angria and Westphalia, Landgrave in Thuringia, Margrave of Meissen, Princely Count of Henneberg, Count of the Mark and Ravensberg, Lord of Ravenstein and Tonna, et cetera.

The main point is that the older generations of the British royal family are mainly of German ancestry. Mountbatten, for example, is an anglicization of Battenberg.

To deny ones heritage is silly. They may be considered English, but they are still German.

Wir sind ein Volk.

The English fired their Scottish King James II in the Glorious Revolution of 1688 and hired William III of Orange (Dutch). Queen Anne was a Stuart but most of her relatives were Roman Catholic so they could not ascend the throne due to the Settlement Act of 1701. George I was the first German King (from Hanover). After the Glorious Revolution, Parliament sets the succession and they can change it even today. There may be talk of removing the males first provision, for example.

Every time I see one of those TV shows about the British Royalty, it make me want to puke. At least in America, people who don't work, only make slightly more than i do.

Perry

about 20 years ago QEII visited Sacramento.

My Gawd I wanted to gag on all of the high falutin' people around here falling all over themselves trying to impress the Queen.

It seems that the pecking order awareness is really ingrained in us.

Succession isn't totally automatic; parliament determines who will be King or Queen but it runs more on autopilot. Sort of like if the President was named by congress then they set in motion where it just stays in the President's family by a predetermined succession formula unless they decide to change it.

America has its own forms of Royalty, albeit unofficial Royalty. Official or not, society will still have a caste hierarchy where the lower end of the caste will be envious of the upper end.

That title reminds me of the preamble to the 1795 Treaty of San Lorenzo which, among other things, established the Southern boundary of the United States which divided their territory from the Spanish colonies of East and West Florida.

With this intention, his Catholic Majesty has appointed the most Excellent Lord, don Manuel de Godoy, and Alvarez de Faria, Rios, Sanchez Zarzosa, Prince de la Paz, duke de la Alcudia, lord of the Soto de Roma, and of the State of Albala, Grandee of Spain of the first class, perpetual regidor of the City of Santiago, knight of the illustrious order of the Golden Fleece, and Great Cross of the Royal and distinguished Spanish order of Charles the III. commander of Valencia, del Ventoso, Rivera, and Acenchal in that of Santiago; Knight and Great Cross of the religious order of St John; Counsellor of state; first Secretary of state and despacho; Secretary to the Queen; Superintendent General of the posts and highways; Protector of the royal Academy of the Noble Arts, and of the royal societies of natural history, botany, chemistry, and astronomy; Gentleman of the King's chamber in employment; Captain General of his armies; Inspector and Major of the royal corps of body guards &c &c &c and the President of the United States, with the advice and consent of their Senate, has appointed Thomas Pinckney, a citizen of the United States, and their Envoy Extraordinary to his Catholic Majesty.

Which, I like to think, implies U.S. citizenship is as good as being the Prince de la Paz, Grandee of Spain of the first class, knight of the illustrious order of the Golden Fleece, &c &c &c.

Sillyness about royalty is part of New Orleans Mardi Gras

The original intent and continuing theme is for the wealthy debutants to "come out." (It's the formal presentation to society that they are now eligible for marraige.) The krewes of Mardi Gras have elected Kings and Queens (that change each year), and all of the pomp and circumstance is for the debs when they promenade before the current King & Queen of the krewe and before the audience.

Throwing beads and favors in the parades before the balls mimics the royalty of europe throwing favors to the peasants.

Main difference with New Orleans, is that they are essentially making fun of the snotty royals of europe.
