Just missed a bullet last night
My wife, who is a light sleeper, woke to an acrid burning smell in the upstairs of the house
After a bit of chasing around we found that the battery in my laptop had fried its self and was trying to burn a hole in my desk
It had also managed to melt / burn through a plastic desk protector.
We were lucky, very very lucky
Yikes! Glad you caught it in time!

Wow that could have been catastrophic, glad all is well. Now procure a lawyer (Solicitor?) and sue the hell out of IBM and the battery manufacturer.
You will win!

Jim, I'm curious what state the laptop was in? On, Off, Charging?
The good news is that you are able to report this to us.
The bad news is that this can even occur.
I have got a bit paranoid about Lithium ion batteries and although smoke detectors are not required in houses here, I have them fitted where ever I have any charging stations, but I have even given up on that , and only charge anything while we are awake and someone is in the house.
We have had to do a few after the fire surveys for re build purposes, and it seems so often the fire is linked to some sort of device charging or running a transformer in a small home office.
Those Li Ion batteries charge so fast and have so much energy in them , gives me a wobbly ...
Glad your wife caught it in time. Definitely worth plugging everything except refrigerator out at night it seems.

I went to use the laptop around 19:30hrs - was flat, so plugged it in.
I left it in hibernation (effectively off) but charging.
We discovered the issue around 23:30

The lawyers would be the only ones who will win here.
My pockets are nowhere near deep enough to look at mounting an international court case
No, but I bet you could be pretty convincing in getting a free replacement (upgrade).
Not too long ago, I made a pot of coffee but didn't put the pot in the maker. When I came back into the kitchen the brew had gone all over the counter, down the front of the cabinets, across the floor and under the refrigerator. When I pulled out the fridge to clean up the mess we discovered that the fan cooling the compressor had stopped and the floor had an eight-inch burn mark on the linoleum that was hotter than heck. We often wonder what may have happened if we had grabbed the coffee and left for work that day.
Your results in a suit would depend upon the battery.
Original OEM battery and they should replace your laptop with top of the line.
A battery on their list of do not use batteries and it would not be valid claim.
good luck
Last week I turned the stove burner on high under a pot of coffee...or so I thought. 10 minutes later I came back into the house to see a cast iron pan of bacon grease getting ready to ignite.
House was full of stinky smoke.
I turned on the wrong burner.
Going to try and not leave bacon grease on the stove anymore.
Glad you are OK. Both my wife and I have poor noses, I think it would have to be one of the five smoke alarms.
What model of IBM or Lenovo, I run ThinkPads exclusively!
A house about 300 feet away burnt down a few years back, probably cause was the coffee pot on the kitchen counter. Worst part is what didn't burn the first time, burnt the second time, that was on the local FD, they missed a smoldering wall or something and it reignited in the middle of the night. All my kitchen appliances get unplugged when not in use, BUT I have a ton of chargers, PC's, routers, etc. that are on 24-7 in my office and around my house too, makes you really think.
