Hi guys, hope all are busier than myself. Not complaining, in fact I kind of enjoy the work load right now

Anyway, I am looking for someone to dazzle me with their sudoku skills.

I would like to scan and email you a puzzle I have started and let you tell me how to find one more number. I think I have looked at all possibilities, and I hope the puzzle doesn't come to guessing to continue.

Any takers?

thanx,

geezer

Not sure I can dazzle anything, but love doing the Sudoku. Send it to me and I will play with it. Email in profile is good.

Kinda busy on a 3-D pinball game right now, but I'm sure there are some people out there with time to help you with that.

Two minutes, two hours, or two days?

I often do the ones in our newspaper. The majority I can get by writing down nothing but final answers. I keep going through with rotating techniques. First I go through the digits, seeing where I already have that digit and ask, "is there only one place left in this row/column/3square that this digit can go?" It is important to note places that the number is confined to a limited set of places, and apply this. For instance, you may deduce that only one column of a 3square can hold that digit. Then you know it isn't anywhere else in the column, and that may be sufficient along with the other knowledge to pin down where it goes in another 3square that shares the column.

Then I go through likely squares ask "Is there only one number that can go in this square?" Rinse and repeat.

Some I have to give up and write in lightly all the remaining possibilities for each square. Usually when I do that, I find that in some row or column there are two squares with the same two possibilities. Then I can remove those numbers from the possibilities in all the other squares in that row or column as the case may be. That may lead to deducing some other square's answer.

Occasionally I get one in the Sunday paper where those techniques aren't sufficient. When all else fails, then I start by picking one of the possibilities in a square and underlining it. I go through using that guess and underlining the results deduced from it. That can lead to a contradiction - two of the same number in a row or wherever. Then I know my original guess was wrong (the intermediate ones are still possible). I erase that first guess and see where that gets me. On a really bad day I have to guess a second or third time.

I don't think I've ever found one I couldn't work by these techniques if I had the patience to keep applying them.

Post it here.

One trick I use when I get stuck is to write every number still possible in every square, then start eliminated them one-by-one ... it's hard to explain but it's always worked for me on the tough ones.

Hoping to see it posted here.

Guessing?
Writing down little numbers?

That's cheating!

So is telling her you love her and respect her and will call her again, but, whatever it takes to reach your goal is the most important thing.

So what other techniques do you use to avoid "cheating" when the ones I described don't get you there?

Bill, I find it easier to only put in the definite numbers first, then add the numbers where only a choice of two for a square.

Go on line for some tips on solving .

BTW GEEZER still waiting for that sudoku..

Sounds like you follow about the same procedure as I described above. So by his definition, you "cheat" too.

By my definition, it isn't cheating if all the logic happens in my head. Using some auxiliary pencil and paper memory is ok.

When I'm totally stuck, I use this site: http://www.sudoku-solutions.com/ to get a hint. If it's a really tough one, like in the Sunday paper, I let this site seed it for me, I print it out, and work it like that. Seeding take a lot of time, but if you do that, they are much more manageable.

Solvers;

Cheating is when someone gives you the score. Kind of like getting 6 points for a touch-down in football before you get on the field. THAT IS CHEATING.

To write down some posibilities of numbers in a margin for reference is kind of like the football coach using his "list of plays". You won't find any professional level coach attempting to "win" without referring to such a play card.

If anyone wants to call me a "cheater" because I use the legitimate tools at hand, well, then go for it.

I HAVE BEEN CALLED WORSE BY MUCH BETTER!!!!!!!!!!!

puzzle will be on its way ( I have a dinosaur for a scanner.

thanx,

Let the rave continue

Here's a nice source for sudoku's. You can pick the difficulty level or solve all of them if you wish. Very easy to fiendish. Click on the little box that says "new puzzle". Note you can verify your solution when done. New ones every day.

No Bill, only put the very minimum numbers in, which is not loading all squares with all potential numbers. Only put definite first, then it gets down to a choice of a definite two in a square using logic.

Geezer, I wouldn't mind getting a copy of the puzzle you're stumped on....if you haven't solved it already.
