A: When it's not on the back of anything.

An article in today's New York Times online showed this photo earlier today:

I emailed the reporter about the misidentified equipment, expecting nothing to happen. Much to my surprise, he responded half an hour later and explained that, while he doesn't write the captions, he would see that it got fixed. Next time I checked, voila:

Q: When Is A Trackhoe A Backhoe?

The front or back of a trackhoe is determined by the drive gears on the tracks. The gears are to the back. From that photo one cannot determine the the orientation of the tracks.

The arguement is, is it a backhoe only when located at the back end of a tractor or is it also a backhoe when the boom is facing to the back of the tractor?

An excavator could be anything from a teaspoon to a nuclear warhead. Send him another eamil.

To my way of thinking, it's only a backhoe when the hoe is mounted on the back of a tractor, typically one with a loading bucket on the front. But feel free to email the reporter if you like -- he's very responsive!

Guys, excavator is the write word.

Even CAT call them that. They should know.

Errr oops.

The problem with writing about the right way of writing is that it's right easy to get mixed up and write write when right is right.

At least they didn't call it a bulldozer. It seems that the TV folks think that every piece of heavy equipment is a bulldozer

I don't know how many times I have done that. I know how to spell and pronounce most words. When you fingers type almost as fast as you say the words in your head, sometimes they just type one of the spellings instead of the wri er..correct way. It's like you think a word and type it without "thinking" the word one letter at a time.

Of course when someone else does it, it looks stupid. So the worst-case scenario is when you go on to scold someone for the typo and do one or two in your correction-post. 😉

I agree w/ CSS

It's always good to use the write term when righting a newspaper article.

"A rose by any other name...

would smell just as sweet."

Local venacular 'round here would call that equipment:

1. A push-cat

2. A motor patrol

3. And yes...a vibratory sheepsfoot IS a bloody nuisance.

I've never seen a grader with snow tires. Part of living in the South, I guess!

Often times when there is a buildup of ice on the road, a typical truck mounted snow plow does not have the ability to put downward pressure on the road surface to remove the ice. The best piece of equipment for that is a grader.

In California they scrape the road down to pavement but leave the chain controls on except any 16 year old kid with an SUV can burn up the highway with no chains. It makes no sense, whatsoever.

But I'm not bitter about it.

Interesting. Here we get just a little snow or ice and it is utter armegeddon. A real soup sandwich. Just as you can count on 30 car pile up due to the arctic apocalypse, you can also count on all of the many carpetbaggers here dissing Texas drivers with the ole "you idiots dont know how to drive in weather" talk. I knew they plowed the snow but I did not realize that they went through and scraped the ice off the roads for y'all. This is good to know for a rebuttal. Thank you.
