I some how managed to keep my opinion to myself while that thread rolled on. But I must admit I did read most of it. It reminded me of watching the Weather Channel as a hurricane approaches - a long drawn out redundant story with an inevitable ending.

I also escaped exile- at least for now.
Sometimes we get what we deserve. Sometimes we get lucky and don't. But, some of us do need to be a bit more conscientious about what we do here. I know I have been guilty of things for which I am not proud. For those who haven't been on here for more than seven years, you don't know what you missed back before Wendell and Angel took the reins. There were great technical threads just like today, but there were also some very radical threads with vicious posting on both sides of issues that had nearly nothing to do with the world of surveying. Personal attacks were rather frequent and sometimes very vicious. Many very worthy posters disappeared because they were not comfortable hanging out with the thugs.
I believe that 3 people have been sent to the penalty box. IMHO two of them, both long time and valued contributors, aught to have their suspensions reduced on appeal.
The third I addressed directly within the "Hatfield and McCoy" thread. There was a fourth who seems to have escaped justice.

If I'd do some soul searching I would probably have to admit I have also. What I AM proud of is the wheelbarrow load of replies to various posts that never made it off my screen. 😉
For a few moments I felt bad for the banned members, one in particularly due to our long-term correspondence and the jokes we've shared. But then I read (word for word) the little ditty Wendell posted defining trolling. It sure seemed to fit. And like they say; "if it walks like a duck and sounds like a duck; it's a duck"...
When one reduces the technical content and the use of 5 dollar words down to the clear theme of "Bless your heart you ignorant bast*rd, you can't possibly know sh*t because of where you're licensed" is probably a conscious provocation. While that impression is clearly my own opinion, I bet I'm not the only one that read that between the lines time after time. And it is a responsibility to each of us to be able to distinguish between discussing different opinions or practices and an act of provocation.
Wendell said he cleaned up the offending thread, but I can't find it.
Is it hidden to some of us?
Or, did it never get put back up?

I hope it's okay to mention names....unless that's banned also. I used to let Kent get me upset, but I learned to roll with his pops and jabs and to just kind of joke along with "everything being tougher in Texas" and how "easy" we have it in PLSSia. After doing that I was able to appreciate his actually good posts so much more. I hate seeing Mr. Karoly get banned, because he contributes so much more on the more legal side of surveying. I actually always looked forward to his good posts. He did start to attack Kent more lately I think, and that's just too bad. I have little to say about the Kent Jr. Texan. I thought his banter was a bit too in-your-face. @Wendell Please delete this message if actually naming the guys is not permitted. I just think "we all know who" and most of us figured it out by looking at their profile and the word "banned" by their name.
One thing to keep in mind, both when posting and when reading others' posts, is that the line between friendly banter and real insults that would be apparent face-to-face is nearly invisible on the forum. This leads to people going too far and also in people taking offense where none was intended.
In general, we have a tendency to take EVERY thread off topic after a few pages. Looking back, I know I've helped with too many diversions. It would be nice if we could learn restrain ourselves from diverting the technical threads, and keep the other stuff under chit-chat.
One thing is certain. There would have been some nose punching going on if everything said here had been said face to face. Most especially back in the P&R days when some flew completely off the nut wagon. A little teasing in good fun is one thing. Outright attacks are something else.

Perhaps for some. I don't drink alcohol. I am fond of coffee though, which is why you often see me here late at night. That shouldn't be taken to mean that my late night posts are calm and cogent.

No, not even a Macallan 18. Besides, it goes for $250 to $300 a bottle these days.

I too have found the best distilled spirits have lofty price tags. My fav is Zapopan Tequila Reposado is 100% Puro de Agave, produced at Fabrica de Tequilas Finos in Tequila, Jalisco.
It is available at Trader Joe's grocery stores for $9.99 for a 1 liter bottle....
Good stuff Maynard. 😉
I was away from the computer. I guess I missed something. Sounds like it might of been a good thing I missed it.
There are boundaries and then there are boundaries.
new term for today: word salad...interesting..
In Item #3 where the term word salad is introduced there is another mindbending term used in the sentence immediately preceding that one. I will not repeat it here, but it's a dandy. Thank you @half bubble
That is amazingly accurate.
