I walked from the truck to the front door of the Courthouse in Watonga this morning.
I was halfway across the lawn when a red-tail hawk feather (a wing feather, I believe) slowly spiralled down and landed at my feet.

I first I thought it was a leaf. There are several sycamores in front of the Courthouse, but I was well away from any of them. The feather gracefully flittered out of a blue, clear sky. When it landed 2 feet directly in front of me I realized it was a hawk feather.

Kinda cool, but I can't emphasize enough the creep factor. I'm not a particularly superstitious person, but afterwards I was a bit jumpy and listing to starboard.

It's above the truck visor for now. Anybody have any insight?

I'm sure there will be a few corny remarks, too. I can't shake this off, maybe a laugh will help.

Actually you may want to reconsider keeping it. Possession of some hawk feathers is a crime.

That's my reply as well.

Possession of feathers is a crime here and punishable with jail time!

Can't possess a feather that falls fromthe sky? What dumb laws we sometimes encounter....

One day I came home from workto find a 14" trout lying inmy driveway. No obvious cause or reason....

All I could think of was the Godfather and Lucas Brazza..holding the bullet proof vest with the fish wrapped up in it, "Lucas sleeps with the fish tonight."

But it's been ten years since I found that fish....and I'm OK...

Don,

We may want to consult an unbiased third party on that one. 🙂

I live on a lake (188 acres) in Central Florida, between the Osprey’s and the red-tailed hawks there ain’t a rat, snake or fish safe for long. Occasionally a Bald Eagle will show up as well.

Is it really against the law to posses hawk feathers? Somebody needs to tell that to Richard Petty.;-)

I wouldn't try and make too much out of it. It is just one of those real life experiences that make anything choreographed pale in comparison. 🙂

A few years ago, my brother picked up an owl feather which he found in the woods. Hung it from his car rear-view mirror. Sometime later, he got a speeding ticket and the cop also cited him for illegal possession of said feather. He had to pay the fines for both offenses.

This occurred on the Rez, where there is extra sensitivity to the issue, but the law holds true even off Rez.
