Apparently, the Belize authorities are P.O.ed about this.
>The Noh Mul temple in Belize was levelled by a construction company to make gravel for road filler. The temple is estimated to be 2,300 years old, and was one of the largest Mayan pyramids in the country. Only a small core of the pyramid was left standing.
>The site of Noh Mul was a major Maya ceremonial centre located in the Orange Walk/Corozal area of Belize. Twin ceremonial groups contain ten plazas and are connected by a sacbe or raised causeway.
That's outrageous, and very sad.
Ignorance is one thing. Outright stupidity is criminal.
"Outright stupidity is criminal."
Unfortunately it's not. Otherwise, there would be a whole lot more people in prison or some sort of institution......:-$
What is it about yellow cats and monuments?
Can't we all just get along?
We had some very early manmade hills in eastern Nebraska called "Spirit Mounds" which I think were similar to those in eastern states. There are no borrow pits near them, so I don't believe people really knew how they were constructed. One theory was that incoming tribes each brought in soil to keep adding to the mound. Long story short, farmers bulldozed them when they started plowing up the fields for cultivation. There was one about two miles from where I live and it is noted on an early map. You can only see a small rise in the field there today.
Reason for so many churches and cathedrals in Mexico is that the Spaniards excavated the existing pyramids and used the materials to erect houses of worship in the same places.
