I decide to get up this morning and hike up Pilot Butte to watch the eclipse. When I got to the top at about 5 AM there were 2 other folks. Both of them were setting up tripods for very serious cameras with yard long lenses. Since I had the dog with me and didn't want him knocking over any cameras, we walked down below the westerly brow of the hill to snap some shots. By total eclipse (6 ish) there were more than a dozen moon gazers at the top, with more hiking up the road. Nice way to start the day. Now I’m going to go nap…
On the hike up - town and a not-yet-eclipsing moon

Looking through the zoom down at town and the two big christmas trees:
Full eclipse. Or at least close enough for me (it was somewhat brisk this morning and I was hankering for some hot coffee).
On the way down I caught a view of the eclipse being eclipsed by the hillside:
And to the east, the day begins:
Thanks for the pictures, Mike. We missed it in the foggy Valley.
Last night it was clear so I set my alarm for 5- got up and we were socked in.
Thanks for enduring the cold and posting the pics.
Thank you for sharing, wonderful pics.
Thanks for sharing. If you're looking for a real nice sunrise you should head up grey butte, and don't take the easy road to the top, go around and hike straight up!
Had a clear view here too, but I didn't take any pictures. This is pretty much what I saw though:
😉
SWMBO was up early to take advantage of the good deals at Fred Meyer's. I would've been up early anyway.

Nice photos Mike!
I had a good view at my cabin at Shell Lake, 100 miles from nearest road or light. Absolutely quiet. A few flurries of snow, stars out, and northern lights. I stood out on my deck at +6F and smoked a cigar. Full eclipse was at 5am or so, then it went black for 1/2 hours or so, then started relighting. Totally awesome. I did have my good Leica binoculars.
Stupid me, I knew about it, but forgot to pack my good camera. I did take a bunch with my Android, here is one that is so so. Hopefully it will do a little justice to my description.
Cool photo. Goodness, Northern lights AND a lunar eclipse. That must be mindboggling to stand there with all that swirling around over your head. Funny, I took a cigar with me to pass the time but forgot matches. Should stitch some into the dog's collar since he always is around during cigar worthy events like camping trips, hikes and eclipses.
Doug, you see the world so much better than the rest of us!
Curly - Grey Butte is a hidden treasure. It has a commanding view of the whole area, best view this side of the Cascades. I bet a sunrise from the top would be exceptional for those motivated enough to hoof up that beast in the dark. I found that pushing my mtn. bike like a shopping cart up that "easy road to the top" enough of a challenge.
