Yes, it's been a (somewhat) valuable tool to get in touch with new clients, get back in touch with old associates, and I'm even connected with some of y'all on there.

And even by normal standards it's mostly insufferable with the constant self promotion and back patting.

But since the shutdown began... I don't know how many surveyors are on there posting about work as though they're storming the beaches at Normandy to go about continuing the daily practice of our profession... but it's a lot.

I never post or comment there, and won't start, but the temptation to scorn some of these guys is real.?ÿ Oh well, carry on.?ÿ Thanks for letting me vent it here.

I tend to use the Dougie filter; if it doesn't look like something I'd want to read, I don't read it.

There's a lot of good content there; Gavin and xyHt magazine; Get Kids into surveying; Surveying in Australia, just to name a few.

Linkedin has it's place, as most the internet does, you don't have to go there if you don't want to...

@dougie oh, i'm well aware.  like i said, i mainly use it to either get in touch with counterparts or else scope out clients/counterparts as part of recon on projects.  and i do pretty well avoiding a lot of it, it's just become pretty prevalent.  just seems kind of tasteless- i'm grateful to be working and making money, i'm certainly not presenting to anyone that i'm some kind of hero for doing so.

saw a guy on the highway last week in a lifted pavement princess crew cab with big shiny wheels and totally pointless off-road tires, and he had a big, obviously custom made vinyl sticker on his back window that read: #ESSENTIAL  i don't know if he was or wasn't a surveyor- suspect not- but he sure was tacky.

I post sporadically on LinkedIn, sometimes in spurts... I post progress photos of my construction projects, congratulate others on accomplishments, share articles I find insightful or want to support.

The photos are a marketing tactic - reminds others of what my company does. My competition markets aggressively, so I have to do something to keep the name out there.

Scorn me if you must. Somehow I will endure.

@stlsurveyor

Is Tender, the surveyor's version of Tinder?

@richard-imrie

Yes.

For rugged, intelligent, opinionated measurers that need a shoulder to cry on, once in a while.

@flyin-solo I always thought guys with trucks like that are just overcompensating for the shortcomings of a certain anatomical feature.

Somehow my account attracted several sub-professionals who didn't like rules. I poofed it. Tried again several months ago and quickly remembered why I left. POOF.

For me it's pretty valuable for business development/marketing; most of my contacts these days are existing & potential clients, very few survey profession peers (except potential teaming partners on public works projects).?ÿ?ÿ

All the headhunters get on my nerves occasionally, but when I got pissed off and quit my last job and switched my setting to "open for recruiters" I had two interviews set up in 24 hours and a job offer as VP of a multi-disciplinary engineering/survey firm within a week. So I got that going for me.?ÿ ?ÿ?ÿ

I've pretty much weeded out any contacts who uses it as an alternative to Facebook.?ÿ?ÿ

@tim-v-pls

offense is in the eye of the beholder, i reckon.  i wasn't aiming my comment at people posting about what they do- obviously it's the point of the site.  it's the "in these uncertain times..." attitude that's laughable-  like our gig isn't naturally low on human interaction factor in the first place.  or as if we're running into burning buildings to rescue covid patients when we're doing a control cook...

that's all i'm talking about.

@flyin-solo Ah... gotcha. Yeah, I often find myself thinking, or even saying aloud, "Ok, i get it. Enough already..."

In these uncertain times I stand shoulder to shoulder with my brethren (and sistren) surveyors carrying forth with our essential duties of finding and resolving pin cushion corners.

And by shoulder to shoulder I mean 6 feet apart.

As measured by the center line axis of my erect posture.

So more likely, our shoulders would be 4 ft apart... which in some states you could be arrested for...

So... should we be 8 feet apart center to center???

Gawd, this is so hard...
