If you had been around in 1919 to see this when it was new......
I mean, seriously, wouldn't you just keep drinking?:-D
But if you HAD to, which one would you? I am thinking the center to the left of the sign 🙁
They all look so angry,
the smile on the face was not invented yet in 1919!
chr.
However, the "ugly stick" was apparently invented PRIOR to 1919.
I'm jussayin'....
per capita alcohol consumption in the 19th century was massive. Their motto was "You can't drink all day if you don't start early."

Dang. Is that a shot from the "Thighs are us" calendar?
Or maybe the "Knobbie Knees Girls" calendar?
I have heard a lot of the reasons why people didn't smile back then was because their teeth were all rotted out. Or maybe smiles were just not in style then. 😐

Speaking of, Boardwalk Empire, seems like a pretty good show about the era of prohibition. The first week was kind of slow, setting up the characters, but has gained some steam since in my opinion.

Before I get in biggggg trouble....which one is Grandma Cash?
The WCTU Had A Booth At The Bloomsburg Fair
When I saw the 2 older ladies sitting there I was reminded immediately of that photo. Neither looked as good as the photo. I just shook my head and walked away as it would have been too cruel to even laugh to myself.

They say that beauty is only skin deep, but that seems just about right, to me.

Dang I think I know the great granddaughter of the third one from the right (horizontal stripes).
Drinking? I don't think even heroin would help that lot.

Angel,
The first photographic emulsions (on glass plates) were orthochromatic - not sensitive to red light or to any flesh tones, including lips. All reds and pinks would come out BLACK. The exposure times were slooow ... minutes, in fact. People cannot hold a smile for that long. Therefore, they would maintain their normal expression and the developed photographs would then be retouched with pink paint to render the black lips of people pink.
So now you know.
Besides which, as the song goes, ... "All the girls get prettier at closing time."
