For those of you who not have experience with this infernal weed it is kudzu and it has one and only one redeeming quality, in the late summer it has a very fragrant flower and it is actually quite pleasant but it does not compensate for the downsides of this miserable vine. But then you come upon a scene such as the barn it is like another world. You cannot see the barn until you are almost on top of it and it is in the middle of this kudzu patch.

Kudzu is one of many failed attempts to make the world run itself better, or at least more convenient for ourselves. I spent a few years in Georgia and it does create some bizarre scenes. It also creates an inferno if you try burning it when it dies. Unfortunately it rarely dies..?ÿ
It's actually edible.?ÿ

It can be used to make Ethanol...
Years ago we had quite a few goats. One day the wife read an article in the paper, written by some college professor PHD guy, about how much goats love kudzu and how good it was for them. She recruited all four children to go across the road with her to gather kudzu for the goats. Save a few bucks on feed, right? They gathered an impressive amount and proceeded to give it to the goats. Not a leaf or stalk was eaten. So anytime somebody says kudzu is good for something, they are lying to you! Knowledge from experience, your mileage may vary.

Stacy, did those goats have anything else to eat? I have seen areas that were overgrown with kudzu and after the introduction of goats it was completely cleaned up but that is all they had besides water.?ÿ
Critters are weird. ?ÿYou can take a freshly made bale of hay to a herd of cattle and they will not eat it. ?ÿLet it set for a month or so, then take it to them. ?ÿThey will eat every bit of it.
My dog likes to roll in stuff that's been sitting there a long time and starting to stink...
Had a dog for over 10 years that delighted in rolling in the fresh doings of his fellow species, to such an extent that you had to keep a constant eye on him for the tell-tale signs of him about to roll onto the back of his neck, which is where he seemed to like it to smear. Now we all know dog sh-t stinks, but it's particularly bad when it travels along beside you. Not sure why he did that, other than he was just a p...k (rhymes with "brick").

When I was in high school, I worked for a retired Army Colonel that went into farming and ranching. One spring day I was looking at some leftover peanut hay and asked him "You mean your cows actually like this stuff?"
He said?ÿ "They didn't like it for the first couple of weeks but after that, the cows got to where they liked the peanut hay pretty good!"

They were definitely well fed and the wife would have never let them starve long enough to see if they really like it or not. So I guess given a choice, kudzu isn't at the top of the list for goats.
That stuff runs rampant in North Carolina too...well, actually, it runs rampant everywhere it goes. I have not experienced the flower you speak of but that sounds like a short lived positive experience.

Y'alls goats must have been defective or something.?ÿ I've heard from more than a few goat farmers about how their goats will eat kudzu.
I'll know for sure soon enough.?ÿ I plan on turning my herd lose on some of it.
