Not to turn this thread political, but this is exactly the kind of things Rick Scott is trying to get rid of. You shouldn't need a freaking license to trim trees! The inspector in the case was following the law. This is the outcome from stupid laws.

There is some question as to whether this was a breach of any law. He was NOT conducting business in the city.

I would think that the license for tree trimming would apply if he was trimming trees, irregardless of what he was charging.

Here is the city code.

I suppose they are worried about some yahoo dropping a 200 year old oak on the neighbor's house and killing someone.

I was wondering if the Inspector was married a tree trimmer or had someone in the family who owned a tree trimming business...

Apparently the documentation about competence had been provided in order to obtain a volunteer status. Simple overreaching of the intent of the law, probably triggered by a local trimmer who wanted to charge for the work being done for free. Someone sent the inspector to that residential street, that person should have their name published in the local paper where the complaints received and acted upon are reported.

It is unclear whether they were letting other volunteers cut downed trees. The company guy was probably covered by liability insurance. The neighbor with a chain saw would have uncertain coverage.

Minneapolis sounds like that town that Brian Dennehy ran in the first "Rambo" movie.

Screw that place... what a bunch of tools/fools.

I'd be contesting that ticket ASAP.

After a Tornado I doubt that there was much "trimming" being done. More like removal of hazadous situations.

A tree falls in my yard and I need to hire a certified tree trimmer? NOT!

I figured someone from the "Live free or die" state would have a problem with the government telling one person that they couldn't hire whoever they wanted to work on their yard. Do you think that a tree trimmer license guarantees you that you won't get killed by a 200 year old oak falling on your house?

Yeah, I have a problem with it. What the city did was ridiculous. I was just trying to understand how they could possibly rationalize the behavior of the city officials who prevented the volunteer from helping.

Probably a case of somebody's brother in law having a contract to remove all the debris for the city and it interferes with a union job of some sort.

Looks like if Mr. Homeowner in Minneapolis wants to trim a limb in his yard which is larger than 2" in diameter he will need the license and will also need to be a certified arborist. I don't read any exception to that.
