into a desert, that is.
I want to go to a desert, maybe Arizona as a have a friend in Pheonix, and get out in the middle of nowhere for a night or two camping or maybe an RV-style trip. Can you just go out and take a right/left off a road and drive for a few miles and set up camp?
I need to just lay on my back all night and actually see the stars. Here in Charlotte we can just see the brightest stars anymore and it just suks. I remember being waaaaay outside Sudbury, Canada many years ago and looking up at night to be astounded by the stars, satellites and planets you could see. More stars than dark sky it seemed.
Need suggestions.
TIA!
Don't think you need to go as far as AZ. I know I've been in some remote parts of WV and it's amazing how bright the stars really are. I suspect there are places just as good in Western NC or Eastern TN. But then maybe all you really want to do is "get out of Dodge" - a long ways!
How about heading east into the ocean? Kind of desert like 🙂
Check out Carolla, NC on the Outer Banks. Take Highway 12 North until it ends at the public beach. Drive off of the road and up the beach (4x4 required). Go until there isn't anything else. Camp on the beach. On a clear night you can see all the way to Uranus, maybe farther.

Reminds me of the times a couple of us made some overnight offshore fishing trips. The night sky was a magnificent site out there...some of the shooting stars seemed so close we were waiting to hear the splash! 😉

Never mind, it's too low-brow.
Tucson.
When we lived there and heard reports of shooting stars expected, we'd drive our truck out a mile or so from home and park in a deserted area on the side of the road. Jump in the back with some sleeping bags and just lay there and stare at the sky. It is one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen.
To this day, my daughter remembers that as one of her fondest memories.

I do that every month, rain, sun, wind, heat, cold it doesn't matter.:-)
And the stars are long gone from around here also.:-(
Arizona is a great place for what you want to do. A lot of National Forest Land and just pull off on a side road and find a spot. Not a lot of people do primitive camping any more (I do) because the SWMBO has to have a convenient place to go. Right now is not the best time of year though as it is monsoon season and pretty cloudy every night. Also if you want to see stars, don't do it in the full moon as it is nearly bright as day. If you need some real suggestions on places to go, send me an e-mail.

Pahrump, Nevada
There's a nice KOA there. Lotsa stars at night.
I thought you were startin up an Alice Cooper song.
"I want to get out of this place and go runnin in outer space 'cause I'm 18....."
Western NC is fine but you need to be atop a mountain for good viewing. The wide open plains of the mid-west work just fine.
I want to get out.... then drop DU
Many a night slept under stars in outback staring up at sky. In fact when no lights the area is illuminated from their reflection.
I laugh with City motels and hotels advertising 5 star accommodation. Many times smog prevents U seeing one star!
Here in outback OZ in a swag you get millions star accommodation....

I think you can camp anywhere on BLM land; just don't block the road.
BLM owns huge chunks of land in Nevada, California and Arizona (among others).
