I was out on a job this morning (just got in and my hands are still trembling) down in a draw...at the end of a "trail"...in a pretty thickly wooded area where some reclusive individual is building a cabin.?ÿ I was pretty sure I could hear banjo music...
There were three vehicles by my count, but no personnel.?ÿ As I set up my base I tried to keep the placards on the side of my truck visible so as not to make anybody nervous about what I?ÿwas doing.?ÿ Suddenly behind me I hear two reports of a most unusual noise.?ÿ I'm on my belly crawling for cover at the front of my truck.?ÿ My heart is pounding, I'm peeking underneath the truck to see who was down?ÿthere.?ÿ?ÿI made up my mind on the sound...it was an AR 15 with noise suppression. I heard two trigger taps;?ÿthe first with about 6 or 7?ÿrounds?ÿfollowed quickly by the second of about 5 rounds.?ÿ I didn't even have a marker with me?ÿto write my wife the dreaded "I love you" note on my forearm.?ÿ
After a LONG couple of minutes I stand up and peer around the side of the truck.?ÿ Two guys have walked out the woods and plopped some gear in the back of one of their trucks.?ÿ They picked up a post-hole digger and a shovel and were starting back to work on a fence when one of them noticed me.
"You gonna get us some electricity down here?" he hollered.
I walked down to the fence...still shaking like a hound dog?ÿtrying to pass a peach pit.
"I'm trying." I told him, "But someone just scared the hell out me from the brush.?ÿ It sounded like an auto?ÿ.223 with noise suppression."
He smiled and told me I had good ears.?ÿ That was exactly what it was.?ÿ They were down by the pond reducing the turtle population.
Seems as though last week the County Deputy had been dispatched to investigate their shooting.?ÿ To keep the neighbors from complaining again?ÿhe had purchased himself a "Griffin Arms Model 3"?ÿ (WTF that is) suppressor.?ÿ I told him it works pretty good.?ÿ I also told him I'm way too old to be belly crawling for cover.?ÿ He apologized for scaring me.
Is Oklahoma a great state or what? ? ?ÿ

You know, I'm all about our Second Amendment..."MericabyGod" and all that noise.?ÿ What sticks in my craw with people having bazookas and mini-guns mounted to the bed of their '66 Datsun is that there is no pre-qualification of any kind.?ÿ In Oklahoma you have to pass a test to get a driver's license...but you can breed all the little beady-eyed genetic throwbacks you want with your cousin or own some heavy deadly firearms without so much as even knowing how to read.?ÿ
I'm lucky to be alive after visiting some of the places I've been in this state to survey. ??ÿ
Keep in mind that I live in the boonies. Our closest neighbor is half a mile away as the crow flies (by road it's two miles) and the next closest is over a mile. Anyone that has spent any time in the vicinity knows that gunfire out here is likely recreational. I have scared utility folks multiple times, unintentionally of course. A few weeks ago during some storms, there were about 4 trees that all came down together, across our driveway, with the tops intertwined. My son and I did what we could but there was an eight inch pine standing in the middle of the fallen trees holding the tops about fifteen feet off the ground. Not wanting to climb in or around the tangled mess... Any self respecting Redneck should know the solution. A small hill gave a good angle in a safe direction. So, out comes my target rifle (AR 15) and a magazine later the pine is cut in half. Disclaimer: No utility workers/subcontractors were harmed or frightened during this adventure.
Interestingly, Massachusetts also allows one to marry a cousin, even cousins of the same gender. The gun laws are little more strict, though. You need to pass a safety course and background check before you can be considered one of the well-regulated militia.
