There is a current TV show called "The Cool Kids" about four residents of an old folks home. ?ÿThe one that is 10 years older than me is fine. ?ÿThe one 7 years older is marginal at best. But the two that are younger me disturb me greatly! ?ÿHow dare the writers show such young people as having nothing special to live for!
You are?ÿnot a Senior Citizen until you start thinking you are a Senior Citizen. If that is denial, so be it.
Picked up a Kansas City Star yesterday. ?ÿA front page story told of a nursing home in nearby Raytown, Missouri that has been identified as being one of the worst in the entire nation. ?ÿI am certain my name has been placed on their waiting list by my daughters because I made them eat ripe persimmons when they were kids.
I have never knowingly eaten a persimmon in my whole life, and I'm probably a tad older than you.?ÿ
Did my parents do me a favor??ÿ
In reading about the berry I find there are astringent and non-astringent varieties.?ÿ Maybe you fed them the wrong kind.
Kinda hard to just eat a persimmon as they are chock full of seeds. You have to mush them up and separate the seeds and skin and make a pie or jamjelly.?ÿ
I can assure you they were fed fully-ripened fruit because I had a mouthful of them. ?ÿI pop the whole thing in my mouth then work them around to separate the seeds from the pulp. ?ÿAnywhere from one or two up to about eight seeds per persimmon. ?ÿLook a little like a chipmunk with about 20 seeds stored up in one cheek. ?ÿDelicious fruit at the right time of year. ?ÿThey are terribly astringent before they are ripe, however.
My father used to keep his shooting eye sharp by shooting them out of the tree with a .22 target pistol. It was the same one he used to shoot raccoons out of trees after the dogs treed them. Their eyes reflecting from 6-cell flashlights framed the target for him.
Whoever gets a green one in their mouth will remember it all the remaining days.

Jerry Clower told the tale of "Newgene" replacing the communion wine in the church with green persimmon wine.?ÿ He said they all stood and "whistled the closing hymn".?ÿ?ÿ?ÿ Ripe persimmons are indeed delicious, BUT they MUST be ripe.?ÿ A friend of my father had a Japanese persimmon tree, it had persimmons the size of peaches.?ÿ The 'possums thought they had died and gone to heaven.

persimmons are one of the special treats we get at this time of year. just yesterday they were in a local market, they went very fast, none were left today.
maybe we will get a second run
when I was a kid every ranch had at least one persimmon tree, and we would sneak in and eat them right off the tree.
Your daughters should be blessing you today for opening their eyes. If not, somebody goofed big time.
PS: seeds? they are the size of tomato seeds, maybe some of you are getting odd hybrid fruit.
I'll never forget the day my dad gave my little brother and I a green persimmon. If you remember the old cartoons where a character like Sylvester got tricked into eating something sour and his mouth drew up so bad his lips wrinkled up and got sucked into his mouth, that's putting it lightly... I'll also never forget that proud gaze on his face because we were on his family farm where he was raised, and it was probably the same tree his dad did that terrible act to him.......
Native persimmon trees have large seeds. ?ÿPicture the largest watermelon seed you have ever seen then multiply by four.
?ÿ
The fruit on our natives trees are about 1-1/4" to 2" in diameter at the largest. ?ÿCram eight big seeds in one of the smaller ones and you must really work to recover the sweet pulp.

I can assure you sir that persimmon seeds are much larger than tomato seeds, several times larger than watermelon seeds and whole bunch of them in each piece of fruit.
Had two Airedale terriers that would go out every morning and stand on their hind legs to pull their morning persimmon off the tree. ?ÿThen lay in the grass with the fruit between their paws and peel and eat. ?ÿDamndest thing to watch. ?ÿJp
