My paternal grandfather was a machinist and industrialist, passing down machining to my dad as a lifelong occupation. I always thought it somewhat strange, that although I do have a passion for mechanical engineering, my occupation is in land surveying.
It took me a while to realize that my maternal great-grandfather was a civil engineer who probably also surveyed. He worked on double-tracking the Union Pacific transcontinental railroad through Nebraska and designed some narrow gage fruit railroads in the Portland, ME area. He held a job at one time (in Marion, Ohio I believe) with the city waterworks and met his wife when he purposefully turned off her water while she was watering her flowers. Their daughter was my grandmother and her brother, Uncle Dick, followed his dad into civil engineering. I never met Uncle Dick, so I really didn't pick up any appreciation for civil engineering or surveying from him.
Any rate, I was just curious if there is anyone on here who is familiar with his company, Cowan and Associates, which I understand is still in business somewhere in the wilds of Pennsylvania.
