It seems that cell phones have destroyed privacy. Cannot escape from work. I need an app that replies to txt messages for me, with a pre-made message. Like:

"The owner of this cell phone ie tired. He needs a break. He will be back on xx/xx/xx date, unless he falls of the edge of the flat earth!" Too much surveying has driven him to the edge.

😉

You're too young to be taking vacations; those are for old guys like me. ?ÿ

True. ?ÿPlus everyone assumes the second they send a text is the same second you receive it and will reply within 60 seconds.

My cell phone has an auto response feature in it's built in messaging app.?ÿ You just might have one, if you look through the messaging menu...

The problem is that surveyors have always had a problem with always looking down when on vacation, but not because of cell phones.

When I went to?ÿ Israel I did not bring my watch, my cell phone, or my laptop. Somehow I managed to have a grand time. It isn't a get away if you bring your cares and obligations with you.

Why didn't your PLS business partner just take all the calls and handle the issues while you were on vacation??ÿ ?????ÿ

"I never should have invented the damned thing..."?ÿ Alexander Graham Bell

Who, by the way, resisted his wife's wishes until the day he died to have a telephone installed in his study cottage.?ÿ If you wanted to speak with him in his study you had to walk from the main house.

It is not just vacations, it is also nights, and weekends too.

?ÿ

That is why NO ONE gets my cell number.?ÿ Only family, and close friends, wheo all know to never give my number out.

If I need to, I forward the work # to my cell.?ÿ Everyone who gets called that is not in my contacts always has the privacy code *67 dialed first.?ÿ If they don't answer, great I get to leave a message and deal with it later.

This doesn't work for everyone, but works for me.

I am in the habit of working day or night on drawings and property descriptions and sending them out when complete.

On certain projects, I have a list of people that I will send a text message to so they will know to look for my email or pick up from their overnight lockbox because many things are time-sensitive and need attention.

It has caused me to get some unwelcome call by many office workers husbands as to why I am sending texts in the middle of the night. "Sir, I was just doing what I was asked to do before I forgot"

That always sends me into the mode of wanting to know why do they have loud bells and whistles set on their cell phone to go off when a text arrives on their phone. Mine makes one very low toned chime for each text message while I have been in courthouses that someone's cell phone is striking up some popular music that can be heard on all floors of the building constantly before a matron finds them and gives them the ultimatum to turn it off or leave.

I've had to deal with helpers that were socially active to where it was interfering with our work. I am not the sort that is going to wait for my helper to take care of his fantasy football needs before he can set on a point and log its location or answer the phone mid-sentence of instructions for the next few minutes or the entire daily tasks. It is either cell phone or job, which is more important.

Last week I did a stint of 3 hard days field work out of town, arriving home at 9:30pm on the last day, only to find the compound gates locked and those inside with my keys presumably fast asleep. So I started calling their cell phones. I called and called, then called some more, and concluded that all the phones were on silent, or turned off. So I penned a s***ty little text to send to the leader (to be read when they wake up), then decided not to send it. Then I drove around a bit scouting for a safe place to park up and sleep for the night, couldn't find one, so went to McD's M'cafe to get a fancy coffee but all I got was "LOL we're sorry Sir (aka M'c'pr*ck), M'cafe's closed", it now being 11.00.01 pm. Drove back and parked around the corner from home, started to cry, called some more, cried some more, then ... remembered that the security alarms have SIMS in so that I can text to arm/disarm etc, thought about arming with the view to if someone gets up in the night the alarm would go off and then they'd check their phone, discarded that idea as being a bit harsh, but then remembered that if I call the alarm it rings like a normal phone, and quite loud. Called the alarm six times, then bingo, leader has been woken up, calls me, I give blunt instructions including not to show me her face, then suddenly I'm in, home. We all agreed the next day, for safety/security reasons it's best to have a mobile (and leave it on at night).

I have a fairly large group of children and grandchildren that know dad/grandpa is around when they call, regardless of the time or situation. I do not have that arrangement with any client, employer or coworker. Text me at odd hours without a good reason and you go on my rather extensive blocked list.

As for vacations... my phone has the best camera I've ever owned. Airplane mode works great to prevent interruptions. Checking whatsapp over wifi every few days allows those I love limited access. Everybody needs a complete decompress break from time to time.

@jim-frame

I do the same thing, even when not on vacation. I'm always looking for a nice find. I may not be surveying anymore, but you can't take the surveyor out of me.

Much of my relaxation time is spent at a cabin in a very remote location on the eastern side of the Sierras. The closest cell phone reception is about 7 miles away. I always know when I reach that spot as I am leaving because my phone starts blowing up with texts and missed call notifications. I just turn it off when I am there and put it in my travel bag. Never miss it. My daughters (24 and 21) and son-in-law are joining us there for a few nights weekend after next. I have never heard them complain about not being "connected" while at the cabin. There are many reasons why the cabin is a very special place, but no cell coverage certainly is a plus factor.
