OK you guys, I know there are many techies out there. Here is my issue, there are so many phones out there and when I start to review them my brain goes fuzzy.
I want a phone that acts like my old PDA to carry contacts and calendar stuff that will sync up with my computers for transferring appointments etc. I do not need all of the social networking stuff or music transfers. At this time I do not need to connect to the internet but would like the option for the future.
When I go to the phone stores they are just trying to sell me the stuff they have on hand.
What works for you?
Joe
Well, I have a Motorola Droid through Verizon and I love it. It does far more than what you are looking for, but I can't think of a better way to stay synchronized with your contacts, email and calendar stuff. You setup a Google account online and then tie your Droid to that account and the phone does everything else for you. It syncs your contacts, email, calendar, etc.
If you use some other email service already, you can have Gmail retrieve your messages from your other email account(s). Anytime you read or respond to emails from your phone, add/change appointments, it will instantly sync that information with your online Google account and vice-versa.
If you decide to go this route, I'd be happy to help you set it all up, over the phone, email or in person. Fortunately, I'm only about an hour away from you and I love to visit Portland anyway. 🙂 I'm sure Verizon will help you with most/all of it though, anyway.
We have Verizon and my wife's little cheapy LG phone took a dive the other day. How much are those Droid thingies. Before I send her off to the Verizon store or go myself, I'd like to know what I'm getting into. She is a text-o-holic but other than that doesn't need a lot of bells and whistles, but I'm sure she would learn to need them if she had them.
I believe they are $99 after rebate right now. There is also a Droid 2, but it's really not much different and I think more $$$. I use mine for texting as well, plus it has a built-in Google Chrome browser and a bunch of other stuff. Plus you can download apps to your heart's content.

The wife here also got a Droid and I can assure you I learned how to use the bells and whistles really quick!! This is coming from someone that didn't want to change phones but did so because her husband insisted and there was also a great rebate.
The best part about it...I've slipped and dropped it several times and it still works!! All my other phones shattered from droppings. 😐
Plus they are almost impossible to scratch up. I think they built these secretly for klutzy women. 😉
The Droid screens are made of "Gorilla Glass" which apparently is nearly impossible to scratch. Droids aren't the prettiest phones in the world, but they seem really durable (especially with the covers we got with ours).
Sounds like you need a BlackBerry.
Wendell,
Thanks for the info. I was leaning that way but really needed advise.
I would love to meet with you and Angel when you are in Portland. I think we need some help with our website stuff and the wife was just asking about it last night. So it could become a business meeting at the same time. We are next to Acapulco's restaurant so lunch would be a great idea.

I use a Blackberry. You basically have three types of choices, Blackberry, Android or Windows Mobile phones, a 4th choice might be an I-Phone, BUT I believe that limits you to AT&T currently. These phones all fall into the "smart phone" category, from there you have choices on hardware with each carrier so lots to look at. I looked at all of them that my carrier offered and went with a Blackberry Bold 9700 about a year ago. I am with T-Mobile and have been happy with the service for the most part, they are definitely weaker in rural areas than Verizon or AT&T, BUT they have pretty competitive plans to maybe offset that a bit. With T-Mobile, tethering is officially supported on the Blackberry plans and the data plans are unlimited, some carriers meter the data and/or don't officially support tethering. I know you said you aren't interested in the Internet, BUT if you get a phone that supports it, then you don't want to be backed into a corner on your plan either.
My co-worker has the new Droid X, I have to admit, it is simply awesome.
One downside to getting my wife a Droid is that I won't be able to answer her phone when it rings without some serious studying. I already had that problem with her old phone. We were with some friends the other day and I answered my little flip-phone and my friend says "Oh, my mom has a phone like that".
Here's a picture of my cell phone.....;-)
You can imagine what it's like packing this thing around:-D

I have a BB Bold with tmobile for personal use and a BB curve with verizon for work.
The Bold is a much better phone IMO. I can handle the lesser service area of TMobile, but their customer service sux.
T-Mo's customer service used to be great. I have found that Verizon's customer service is far superior to T-Mo and the same goes for the actual service. Sure, Verizon costs more but you get what you pay for.

Actually it's easier to answer cause there's no flip to it. It's all on the screen with simple instructions which is great for me because I always had problems answering those older phones and my old blackberry.

There's a slot in my dashboard, otherwise, it hangs right there on my hip...;-)
Blackberry Curve with a rubber cover, has survived surveying so far...

Nothing anywhere near that fancy. I just want to make and receive calls.
And still work after I drop it about 4 feet.
