While pushing 73 today, Christamas Eve, in StL I wonder how cold it is in Ely, MN??ÿ Balmy 39 degrees.?ÿ Then the Internet wormhole happened.?ÿ Turns out there is a open position for a small firm in Ely.?ÿ I'd love to live up there!?ÿ Someone better jump on this!?ÿ?ÿ

My Grandmother lived in central Minnesota (near Lengby).?ÿ When we would visit, it was often for Christmas.?ÿ It was 40 below one night and she had a light pole outside her back yard which illuminated the air which was full of sparkling ice crystals, made even more so by the thrown cup of hot water.?ÿ?ÿ
?ÿToday was insane.?ÿ I was running around in a T-shirt because it was 75 F.?ÿ That broke the historical record for the date by two degrees.?ÿ The record low for this date is -10 F.
(Special note for FL/GA and certain others)?ÿ Yes, I was also wearing jeans, socks and shoes.?ÿ Shame on you for thinking otherwise.
That means it will be warmer here soon.?ÿ I guess climate change has its benefits.
All this warm weather makes ice fishing more like "fishing"?ÿ
I field tested my 0?øF sleeping bag at -15?øF in a bivy sack overnight on my back porch once before I would plan on taking it into colder temps.
It was a safe way to see how well my gear worked.
I've done gravity in -25?øF actual, and when using the ATVs to get to and from found small areas of frostbite anywhere exposed skin was.?ÿ My dermatologist sister instantly identified the parts of my ears that had frozen when she saw me a while back....
Fun times!

Probably the same way Floridians handle the hot humid summers. Go from airconditioned house to airconditioned car to airconditioned office or mall back to airconditioned car back to airconditioned house. I would just wilt and collapse into a heat stroke induced coma and quietly drown in my own sweat. Cold keeps the Californians away and that just alright by me.
Us Floridians are good with heat and poor with cold. The worst scenario is Winter (December 01 - Feb ?) when the heater is on at night and the A/C during the day. Personally I'd rather die of heatstroke than hypothermia.?ÿ
Haven't lived further North than N29/-W82 for 65 years (and closing).... ?????ÿ
A Family of Farmers Lived on Manitoba - Minnesota Border
"Mama," he said to his elderly mother, "The Government finally completed their survey on our land. They finally determined that this house is located on the U.S. side. Because of that, we are officially Americans."
"Good," replied the mother. "I am getting old, my body can no longer take those Canadian winters."
@bill93 That cold spell made it to East Texas. 14 days below freezing, ponds froze over. Temp stayed around 20f most of the time. It's still the longest cold spell we have had as far as I know.
We worked every day except Sunday and Christmas day. We had a Jan 1 deadline on a building slab with underground chemical piping on a power plant. Didn't do much, couldn't go home. We got credit for bad weather days as long as we tried to work.
@jaro?ÿ
That was a miserable winter for trying to make money feeding 450 lb. heifers.?ÿ Interest rate was 18.5 %, too.?ÿ Fortunately, I was not surveying that winter.
I didn't have to walk to school in the Mid Hudson Valley, but those buses didn't have the greatest heaters in them, for the passengers anyway, but at least we were out of the wind.
This what it takes to bring the Portland area to a standstill. Usually a snow like this will melt off by 10am. This week it is supposed to stay below freezing all week. It was going to be a quiet week anyway.?ÿ?ÿ
This is what it took to slow things day for about one day in Michigan when I lived there.?ÿ Anything less than this was just another boring Winter day in the Snow Belt.?ÿ They had tremendous crews and equipment working around the clock if necessary to keep commerce flowing.?ÿ To keep any commercial/parking lot open required front end loaders and dump trucks starting about mid-November.?ÿ I recall one Thanksgiving Day with 30 inches of snow on the level already and a 19" blizzard hit that evening.?ÿ That shut most things down for about 24 hours.?ÿ On the opposite side of the State, near Detroit the conditions were similar.?ÿ The daughter of my boss was attempting to return to one of the suburbs of Detroit when the interstate became totally blocked.?ÿ She was in her car for 26 hours straight.?ÿ She could see a truck stop about 1000 feet away.?ÿ Other than some guys coming by on snowmobiles offering hot coffee and some snacks to the stranded motorists all she could do was sit and wait,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,and pray she didn't run out of gas.
Polite citizens in such parts of the country make a point to turn their head when anyone of any age or gender gets out of their stranded vehicle to color the snow some color other than white.?ÿ Mother Nature doesn't care about your bodily functions.
