what is your preference?
Who cares, the parts are stamped "MADE IN CHINA".
Seriously, I try to use the one that has them in stock, so I don't have to wait.
I know the owner of one of the nearby Auto Zones, and he is a great hard working fellow, so in that town, that is my choice. But, in another town, it could be another story.
N
Always been partial to Autozone. Can't tell you why though. (it's not a secret. I just don't know).
If you are not in a hurry for the parts Amazon is nice for auto parts.
I wrote off ever going back to O'rielleys years ago after my 4th fuel pump in as many weeks. I use Napa for everything now. With the veterans discount they are cheaper for better parts...
Rock Auto, too.
Add Advance Auto to list and I don't think there's a bit of difference between the three of them. Closeness and in stock are probably the deciding factor for 99% of the population.

I'll hit up each one depending on what I need. Many times for higher end parts I like to go to Napa.
Palace Auto Parts (NAPA) in Norman, OK since 1923. AZ or O'Reilly's is not a bad place to pic up a quart of straight 50W Castrol or some carb-cleaner but I'd avoid the "hard parts".
I use to work PT at Autozone in the late eighties. The only two things they carry that I can guarantee work are the shop rags and the Gojo hand cleaner. Everything else is reman rejects purchased in lots at auction. They do carry some name brand items like ACDelco electricals and Bendix brake parts..but they're few and far between.
A new Delco alternator runs 169 bucks in a box with a 1 yr. guarantee. AZ will sell you a reman for 39 bucks...as much as we have discussed "you get what you pay for" on this board the answer ought to be glaring.
First Option: Independent local store
Second Option: Franchise with local ownership
After that they're all interchangeable to me
Same goes for hardware stores.

Agree. If I just need something stupid I may stop at Autozone only because it's closer, but for real things it's either Napa or I take my truck or jeep to my favored auto repair guy so he can fix it. He buys all his stuff from Napa or direct from the manufacturer.
I got a battery for my jeep a few years ago from Napa. Well, in this heat and conditions batteries don't last the life of the warranty. Napa gave me credit for upwards of $80 for the replacement. They put the new one in and took the old one. That is called customer service.
Neither.
CARQUEST.
Most parts stores have two prices.
Regular price and Life warranty price.
I usually buy the life warranty price if I plan on keeping the vehicle.
I paid once for a lifetime starter on my 89 Ford F150 and they have replaced it free for at least 6 times and counting.
All the parts stores around here only keep so many of anything that they will call the other to put a part in the hands of the client or simply send them to where it is.
O'Rielly's will rent most any tool. Leave a hefty deposit and get it all back when tool is returned.

I usually go to the Beaverton NAPA because I get better advice there. But my days of wrenching on my own vehicle are mostly over, except for minor things like oil and filter changes and thermostats, etc. I figure if a mechanic shouldn't survey, probably a surveyor should leave mechanic-ing to a pro.

I like good advice as much as the next guy, but that seems a little excessive 😀

Tulsa is where I work. Beaverton is where I live.
There is a CARQUEST and Napa that I prefer to go to first. Autozone would be my next choice and Oreilys would be my last. Autozone seems to have people that work there that at least no a little bit about cars.

[sarcasm]You ever thought of buying a Dodge ????[/sarcasm]
Lifetime warranty = guaranteed to be rebuilt
One year warranty = possibly new part
