Is that Austin, NV or Austin, TX and are you any kin to Bob Reid?

I think you have to have a dimple maker on your person to look for corners around Austin...

Kent:

You shouldn't have asked him that, now you will have him confused and he won't know whether he will be going across or down. 😉

Well, if Pablo is coming to Austin, TX, I'm sure I can show him some survey monuments less than a stone's throw from a decent downtown alehouse. If he's headed to Austin, NV, that will be impossible. The Bob Reid connection is that Bob was a surveyor back in the late 1930's and into the 40's who did some work in West Texas. I'm going to say he was probably a character, based upon a letter or two he wrote that I have copies of.

If it were NV, he would inquired about Nev Mex, not Tex Mex.

TexMex is almost everywhere (aside from Oregon, apparently). You can find TexMex restaurants in NYC, I'm informed. Probably Glasgow, Scotland, too.

The straight answer is the that the best Mexican food is probably on South Lamar at El Meson by the Horseshoe Lounge. If you like enchiladas, their enchiladas are what you'll dream about. Good margaritas at reasonable prices. The chile rellenos are quite decent, too. If you want 1970's-vintage Tex-Mex chow, then, you'll want El Rancho, further down South Lamar (between Bluebonnet Lane and Manchaca Road). I'm not a fan of their enchiladas, but their chile rellenos are memorable. Would recommend.

As for RPLS-type monuments: The best I've seen in downtown Austin are in the blocks between West 5th and West 6th and Rio Grande and San Antonio. Look for the stamping "RPLS 4341" on them.

I suppose there “Tex Mex” places somewhere in the state, but I don’t know why anyone would want to forego eating perfectly good Mexican food by horking down deep fried burritos (“Hi darlin’. Our special today is the chimmy-changer plate with ranch style beans and coe’ slaw”) or a bowl of Wolf Brand chili con carne.

kent clearly has a south-of-the-river bias. if you're on the other side of the municipal toilet, i'd suggest el azteca or cisco's for the real deal/blue collar tex mex, maybe tamale house on airport if you REALLY want to do as the romans...

and yeah, if you head to that part of downtown you'll be absolutey amazed at how many times that number appears. frankly, i don't know how any of us would have made reasonable sense of downtown over the past 10-15 years without kent's meticulous work (and generosity with sharing it).

Thanks to you all. I thought I posted this a few days ago and it never popped up as even a topic on my screen. So I thought in my beer dazed post that I just didn't press the submit button. Kent, I am no relation to Bob Reid. I will be in Austin Wednesday and will definitely look up the brewpub.

Pablo, shoot me your contact info at kentmcm_at_swbell_dot_net and I might even be able to help you find that brewpub if you're going to be anywhere close to downtown Austin. There is one particular table that more than a few visiting surveyors, starting with Richard Abbott, have personally approved as more than satisfactory, but you'll need local knowledge to find it and I'm happy to offer my services. :>
