I haven't had a chance to check the board as of late due to a sudden upsurge in survey requests.

For the past month, every time I think I am going to get caught up, several more calls have come in. Mostly calls for residential sales or new residential construction.

Don't know if it is any kind of economic indicator, but I'll gladly take the work.

I sure do hope that some of you other folks who had very little work coming in are seeing an increase in your workload.

It's been steadily picking up for about 6 months now. We are almost at capacity. I'm starting to watch the weather in the evening, just in case I need to get on the phone and do "damage control" for tomorrow's schedule.

To quote a dead guy, "It's been a long, cold lonely winter.."

Writing a few more proposals, getting none. Lost a $4,500 one this morning to someone who is going to do it for $700...

Picked up in the last 4 months.
Starting to be more particular on what jobs to take. Haven't had to work for someone based on price yet. Still getting my normal rates and may need to hire some help to get caught up with the drafting.
Elevation certificates have kept the lights on for the last 2 years, but it's nice to do some boundary work and a little bit of topo.
Construction staking is pretty much all done by the contractors who have hired experienced grade chasers, but they call me for the asbuilting and certifications they need to closeout their projects. Good pay for these nowadays. Almost as much as it would cost for me to do the staking.

We are slammed in the oil and gas pipeline business and turning down work everyday and have multiple openings for almost every position. However we deal with only a few BIG clients.

How many of you guys that are really busy are getting numerous calls from the general public and taking their work? Or is it a few of your better clients keeping you busy?
What part of the country are you in? Rural or Metro?

You guys that are not as busy, does most of your work come from a few big clients or the general public?

I am not an expert by any stretch but it seems to me that when everyone and anyone is calling that is the sign of good times. NOT when we are dependant on a few customers or one industry that could crash. I am personally rat-holing all of the money I can in anticipation of a hard winter.

FICKLE.

Steady stream comes in, then it goes quiet. It has been like that all year. It's like the economy is teetering between good and bad, and it doesn't take much to swing it one way or the other.

We have been working hard all summer, but it is difficult jobs, some of which we would have turned away or really priced high in years past. Just took on another difficult job in rough territory with known boundary problems to keep the work going.

Super slow here in sw Georgia. It was slow last year but picked up after Thanksgiving till around the beginning of summer. We've only done one small job in August , but picked up a 40 acre job yesterday and a bid for around 1000 acres. Maybe it'll pick up.

All of my workload is what we call "Resource Management," that is timberland boundaries. In our case it is the boundaries of existing State Forest lands or State Forest lands we are acquiring.

This summer is the most logging truck traffic I have seen in several years but of course that is anecdotal.

One driver told me they are supposed to go a speed on logging roads in which they can stop in half the distance of what they can see ahead. Most of them more or less adhere to that but there are a few Mario Andrettis out there; those are the scary ones. I would hate to meet a logging truck going 30mph the other way on a short blind curve. I can see we need to get CB radios so we can at least listen to their radio traffic.
