Too many current clients were there and each one wanted to know when I was going to finish up their job.  You know, the job that is more important than anyone else's job.  Told them I was busy being a judge at the moment.  Each 4-H Club is assigned an area about ten feet by ten feet in which they are to erect some kind of a booth promoting why 4-H is such a great program for all kinds of kids.  The organization that I chair, provides many thousands of dollars of support directly to the kids and their clubs.  BTW, these booths are set up inside a nearly new air-conditioned building.  My electricity was off at home, along with a few thousand other homes in the region.  Took my time evaluating each booth VERY carefully.

Fond memories of the county fair when my boys were little,  the oldest was in FFA.  Near as I can remember the youngest wanted to sit under the stairs and watch the girls get off of the Ferris wheel.

I got an honorable mention one year for my pickles and my strawberry jam.  The canning competition was too tough with all the old biddies from the church.

Man that was light years ago.  I'm glad there's still such a thing.

PS - Hope your AC grid is back up soon.

It was off for around two hours.  My farm mechanic called about 20 minutes before we lost power to say he had lost his power.  He was making repairs on a combine that required welding and then grinding down the bead.  The grinder suddenly stopped.  Cussed the grinder before he discovered the true problem.

Holy cow.  That is awesome work and admirable that on top of everything else you find time to be involved and support the 4H.  Between 4H and FFA I believe with people like you setting the example many of those kids will grow up and be a great part of our country. I try and make it a priority to go by and thank everyone that is involved with my daughters FFA.  We do a small part but some of those parents give a lot of time to the kids.  I hope your power gets back. I am without AC for a week now minus a day.  I went yesterday after work to the local restaurant was there for 4 hours watching a game and nibbled on some food. Just to let the sun go doyand the house cool down a bit. It was 92 in my house by 230 yesterday. Thats with doors windows and fans box fans running.  Once I got through my work day i had had enough lol. Now back to work.

Kids are the future. Kudos to all those who support and raise them right.

I’ve lived without air conditioning most of my life. Draw the cool air in at night and shut the hot air out during the day and turn on the ceiling fans.

It has long been my strong-held belief that we all are a product of the communities in which we spent our youth.  As a general rule,  the school buildings, churches, public buildings, recreational opportunities were dreamed up, approved, built and maintained for our benefit by people who never knew we existed.  They made dreams for the future and found ways to make them happen for ANYONE WHO CAME ALONG to enjoy.

Most of us grew up in a world where volunteers were our primary influences outside of our immediate family.  Whether that be through church, recreational, artistic, music or other activities.  We have become a large part of what we are because of those semi-anonymous donors of time, money and encouragement.

Adults need to recognize how our predecessors paid it forward for our benefit and that, now, it is our turn to be the ones paying it forward for the coming generations, no matter who they may be.

Earlier today I was sharing a small bit of the history of our school district with our new Superintendent of Schools who joined us just three weeks ago.  He mentioned that he was surprised to find such a very nice city library a couple of blocks from his office.  The library was not paid for by the city and its citizens.  It was fully funded by one lady whose great-grandfather had been one of the early business owners.  She had lived most of her life far from this city but chose to put her wealth into the future residents and their children.  Our high school has been blessed by a family of descendants of the primary city pharmacist from the 1920s through the 1970s.  One of his sons became extremely wealthy in the insurance industry in a very different part of the US.  Well over half of our graduates each year automatically receive very nice scholarships for post-secondary education, both college and technical, from that family.

@holy-cow That about sums it up perfectly. People giving what they can. Some money some time. I look back and see how my mom cooked spaghetti every week for the football team. I am talking pots and pots of spaghetti on game days. She worked 10 and 12 hour days but somehow made time to feed a army of high school and junior high football players. I remember toting bags of bread where she made up garlic and butter bread for us. It was not just her but many parents. We mowed and maintained our football field ourselves. We installed the basketball court floor from concrete to wood. A local contractor who did hard wood floors was the brains and we did the labor. People that were financially better off did all the heavy lifting behind the scenes to keep the old school building working and supplies and materials paid for. I had 13 people in my graduating class but the community had a big heart. If i was doing something I wasn’t supposed to somebody’s mom or dad corrected us and got us back on track. Then mom would most definitely get on me. Last night I went to the local restaurant and had a sandwich and watch a bit of baseball and socialize with the locals. The wife and kids are out of town so have to get out once in a while. So many just good people doing so much with school and community.  Thats the news headlines that should be shown. Just everyday people doing what they can.

I wonder what the juvenile population of today will consider their "good ole days"?

The bonding with proper role models will serve the youth well throughout their lifetime.

Those role models include parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles and older cousins, club leaders and other adults who are selflessly helping any and all, plus total strangers who compliment the efforts made by the youth.

Be a proper role model wherever possible around youth.
