I'm posting this to ask if anyone else has had the same problem. My wife has already found a church friend with the same experience. The following is a summary:

Wife to Wells Fargo: I see a bank service charge of $3 for viewing a deposit transaction online. I absolutely have not viewed a deposit transaction this month. This has happened many times before and I have had to request the charge be removed. Please remove this charge.

Wells Fargo response: Unfortunately this charge is automatic if you click on the View Details online, so we cannot cancel this charge.

Wife to Wells Fargo: I am the only one who ever views our accounts on line, and I have NOT clicked on View Details this month. I have been wrongly charged for this service many times in the past and have had it removed. When I use the service I expect to be charged, but not until then. My request having been denied, this is now a demand that you remove the charge.

Wells Fargo response: At this time the fee will not be reimbursed. To speak with a specialist who can review your financial concerns and look for options please call 1-800…

Wife to Wells Fargo: If this is a valid charge then please provide me with the exact date and time when I clicked on “View Details.”

Wells Fargo response: Reviewing the charges on your account will take an additional two business days. We will get back to you then.

Wife to Wells Fargo: Odd, I’d have thought that would be at your fingertips. If you and your supervisor determined the charge was appropriate and there would be no refund then surely you can tell me the date and time I triggered application of the fee.

Wells Fargo response: I have processed a courtesy reimbursement of the $3 charge.

My good wife will be visiting the local Wells Fargo bank manager on Monday for further words on this subject since they still can’t say when she supposedly clicked on “View Details” and triggered the charge. One wonders how many people are unwittingly handing $3 to Wells Fargo.

My personal opinion is, it is time to visit a local friendly credit union.

That sounds very strange to me. Maybe I just don't understand what they're doing, but I use online banking all the time, and to my knowledge there is not charge for anything I do in regards to my account, ever. Of course, I'm not using Wells Fargo.

My son had a similar problem with Wells Fargo charging for outrageous and unused services.

The only solution he found was to end his account and that nearly took an act of congress to accomplish as they refused to acknowledge his account closing, the local branch claimed they could not do so.

They are one place which I stay very far away from.

Wells Fargo bought out the local bank I was using a few years ago, the service tanked and they imposed all sorts of fees. All of our accounts are now at the credit union. Superior service and no fees for online banking.

Bruce,

My wife and I just finished up a long an very frustrating refinance with Wells Fargo. I was very unhappy with the service we received, and would not recommend anyone doing business with them.

I think the only reason we were finally able to get refinanced was because I had a family member that is in the mortgage business, and they told us the right questions to ask, and how to research the complaints against them.

Once we started the complaint process, we were closed within 7 business days. We had started the process back in February.

Odd, we have been banking with Wells Fargo for twenty years and have had good service. We recently refinanced the house with them, no problem at all.

I just asked my wife about online banking. She uses it all the time and we never get charged for it.

Maybe because we are in California? I'm not sure.

When Wells Fargo took over 1st Interstate in Arizona, the service went from 10 to 0 overnight. I opened an account at Bank One (they had a big banner inside saying "Welcome Wells Fargo Customers", which I thought was pretty funny).

Then Bank One was taken over by Chase. I lasted with them a couple of years until they "upgraded" their ATMs (where I did almost all my transactions) and I got tired of watching them crash.

Finally, I switched to Hughes Federal Credit Union about 10 years ago and cannot say how great they have been. Everything is free - the only thing I pay for are checks, which I hardly ever use anymore. I do almost everything online, including bill pay (also free). And they pay interest on everything, including the free checking account.

Strangely, the act as if they actually care about their customers. Very odd, these days....

Somewhat along the same line. When I renew my WV license I can send in a check for the actual amount - period. But if I renew on line they charge me a $2.25 "convenience" fee. Probably to cover credit card charges, but still a joke!

Along the same lines, I can pay my water bill online and pay the convenience fee of $3 or send a check in for the exact amount.

Dammmm! My typical water bill is around $15. I'm not going to pay an extra 20 percent for any reason.

One thing you might check out is pre-paying. I can pay in any amount I want, then let them deduct until the money runs out. A single payment of $180 would take care of about a year's worth of water.

I have done this several times as I have four water meters on the same system. Accidentally forgetting to make the payment on the time would be four times worse than normal.

My water bill is $14 and change per quarter. A few years ago, it was $11 and change. Granted, $14 isn't bad, but trust me, I was upset at such an increase!

License and renewal fees are set by the Legislatures of the States. As a former lobbyist I can attest to the fact that budgets and fees are sliced on a thin margin. If everyone renews on-line it is tantamount to a 3% budget cut. That would spell disaster for many boards.. my 02, Tom

I hope this isn't the case. I do all my banking with my wells Fargo account online. I have to cause I moved to Louisiana and they do not bank in this state. I have learned that wells Fargo has been charging up to 40$ bucks a month for useing non well Fargo arm's. This fee is on top of the atm owners fee. So whenever I use my WF card at the atm I am paying anywhere from 4-6$ in usage fees each time. I did not know that wells Fargo also charged me a fee on top of the atm fee. So I opened up a account with navy federal credit union and will be slowly fazeing out my WF account, but will still keep it just in case I move somewhere that does not have a NFCU.

And I'd be willing to bet that the cost savings of not having to handle the checks, manual posting of payments, trips to the bank with security, etc etc more than add up to the "convenience fee".

Dave

The Montgomery County Circuit Court Clerk's Office will take a check for the exact amount for recording or to put money on your copy card or computer account. But, if you whip out a card for any of those transactions, they will add 3% and it will take them about a half an hour extra.

Trust me... I ALWAYS remember my checkbook when I hit the Clerk's Office these days.

PS: I'm not sure if any of the other counties that I work in add this fee, I simply just take a check these days.

You definitely have too much time on your hands, $3 has you bent, lol.

How much is your time worth?

If they will stick you for $3, they'll stick you for every penny they can get. That's the real issue here.

Sounds like a Tim Wilson bit:

Tim: I've got a bank in Atlanta Georgia that charges $3 to check the balance in your savings account, so you walk up and ask how much money do I have in this account?

Teller: $300, well, $297.

Tim: HOW MUCH!

Teller: $294.

Tim: So if I ask you another 98 times how much money I've got, I ain't got anymore dang money.
