In the early days of my company it was necessary to advertize in the Yellow Pages, but after quizzing new clients for the last 6 months, zero looked me up in the book.
They googled something or asked somebody or whatever and found me that way.
So as of today, I will no longer have an ad in the yellow book.
Not a huge savings, but a savings indeed and I feel good about it.

“Not a huge savings, but a savings indeed and I feel good about it.”
And you should. I can’t think of the last time I used the yellow pages. Although it may seem like an insignificant amount it all adds up in the long run. Even keeping tabs on office supplies and especially daily surveying supplies is imperative in maintaining financial control of your business. Of course accounts receivable is the most important issue, but paying close attention to your overhead expenses is definitely number two. If you implement a system to keep a close eye on overhead you will be pleasantly surprised at years end to find out how much more money can go in your pocket, and that’s a real good feeling.
SWMBO, who keeps the books, pointed this out to me because I always had a tendency to just blow off minor expenses.
Have a great week! B-)

I am listed on yp.com and pay $14/month for an "above the list" placement. yp.com is tied in with bing.com and several other search engines. I also have free "business places" on google.com, yahoo.com and bing.com. They all look essentially the same, and they are free. If you want to see, search "Land Surveyor 24073" and Correll Land Surveying should pop up fairly near the top. It takes a little time, but for free... hey, you can't ask for much more.

I do the same thing Carl. When someone searches for a land surveyor in my area, the YP ads are always at the top of the search results. $40/month puts me at the top of that list in this county and about 5 surrounding counties.
It may be regional, but I still get hits from the phone book and know others that say the same.
See ya later yellow pages... Older folks...
Older folks still use them and the yellow page bill is a pretty small percentage of one decent survey invoice.
Me too... The phone book is super dead.
Some things I had before but don't anymore:
Yellow Page Ad
Fax Machine
Pager
Copy Machine
Drafting Table
I still have my roledex but not sure why

You may think Google is a great thing; so do your competitors
who got Google business options - like putting their banners
on your emails to your clients.
The guy who pays the most to Google gets up higher on the search list.
Other have said the ads are cheap, but they certainly are not here. I have steadily reduced the size of my ads over the years and gone to more internet presence.
I keep saying to my office manager that we need to better track how people are finding us, but we just really have not done it.
The problem with getting rid of them entirely is that your search placement is heavily influenced by your presence on the web. If all you have is your web site then you are not likely to come out high. If you are listed with a lot of the services such as yp.com or superpages then you move higher up. Much of this depends on how Google tweaks their search algorithms. So keeping up ads with yellow pages can help because they usually come with a free web listing and a link to your web site.
I need to do some investigating though and see how much they are influencing google since I would love to get rid of them.
Here you get a free ad in the yellow pages if you are a business and have a phone. Nothing fancy, no displays etc.; just the business name address and phone number. I will take it as long as it is free.
