Just curious,
When you see this in an acknowledgment:
STATE OF____________________)
___________________________)SS
COUNTY OF__________________)
What does the SS mean?
TIA
Radar
The “SS” stands for the Latin term “scilicet” which means "in particular"
or "namely" and simply indicates where the venue information on a certificate
is located. You do not have mark anything or fill in any additional information
on the “SS” designation itself. Completing the areas marked "State of ________"
and "County of _________" with the location where the certification takes place
is where you enter the necessary information for the venue portion of
certificate wording.
Soooo...in other words, it's redundant. But just like me and everybody else, we put it in there 'cause it was on the one we were copying from!

Thank you kind sir, you are a gentleman and a scholar...B-)
I was told years ago that SS stood for "So Signed", "So Sealed", and "Sworn Statement", and never thought to question the meanings.
Yes. I have always thought "Sworn Statement.
I was going to post that but fortunately someone smarter posted first and I was saved the embarassment 🙂 .

This was actually a question my my LS test. I don't remember if it was P&P or State Specific but I distinctly remember this...

When ever I'm in a courthouse with time to spare (waiting on copies) I always open Deed Book #1 just to read the early stuff...and that "SS" is always there (SE Ohio ~1790-1820's)
