I made the last payment on my GPS yesterday, now I own all of my equipment free and clear!
It took me 5 years on a lease but it's all mine now.
Things are starting to pick-up, I might just make some money this year, the last 3 weren't so good.
I hope everyone has a great weekend!
Cheers,
Douglas
It's out of date now. Time to get a new one!

Awesome!!
Good feeling, huh. 🙂
Congratulations Radar! I have one more payment on my data data collector, one more on one of my Promark 3's, and my small total station will be paid off in August. I can't wait!
While you are talking about getting things paid off, I've been doing some research on cost for a DC and an Instrument. If ya'll don't mind sharing what were your payments. Does the surveying supply company finance, or did you go through your bank? Just a few questions I have as I am going to make a serious run at things on my in the next three years. Thanx.
I leased some of my equipment through Hayes Instruments using their Worry Free lease.
I picked up a TDS Ranger 500X with TDS SurveyPro (robotic and gps) and the payment is $152 and some change. This also included TDS Foresight DXM, and the new cradle for the data collector.
My "small" total station is a Topcon CTS 3007. I picked it up for mworking on my last big layout job, because the robot was just too heavy going up and down ladders in the hospital. It is a great little gun. The reflectorless is so much better than the reflectorless on my Topcon Robot. The optics could be a little better, but all in all it works for me. The payment is around $125 a month.
I have two seperate leases for my Promark 3 units. One payment is $82 a month, and that includes the GNSS Solutions. The second one is around $85 a month, but includes two bipods, two rover rods, and a tribrach adjuster.
Hayes requires a minimum of $2500 for a lease, or they did when I started mine. They are very easy to work with, and one month when cash flow was tight, they worked with me.
My Robot and RTK are included in my business loan, so I don't have a "payment" for those two items.
I remember the day I went to Hayes and loaded up the ruck with everything that I needed for starting out. I spent about $6500 on field equipment that day, but that included a seat of Carlson Survey, and getting the equipment cleaned and calibrated. I bought the robot and rtk used from a surveyor who was downsizing.
feel free to email me if you have any questions. Good luck!
I paid off my ProMark3s (3) already (lease). The dealer (Brett Black) arranged the lease. GNSS Solutions L1 version is free.
I own my Topcon GPT2005LW total station. I like it but I've heard a lot of complaints; whatever it works great for me. One thing I do is cycle it off then on again after it is level and over the point. I find this tightens up the vertical angles considerably.
The F150 gets paid off this summer.
Just in time for no work but I haven't really tried. I've gotten too used to having my weekends free.
The lease programs are fine and many supply companies offer a starter setup for reasonable prices for good quality equipment.
Personally, when considering a payment plan, I do the math and set a budgeted amount for a monthly payment. Then I go to the bank and let them know that I am wanting to pay $xyx a month and borrow $ys,ysy and see if they want by business.
On a side note, there is the local historical rags to riches of Blackburn going to a bank in his hometown and wanting to borrow $200 to start a syrup works. He was declined a loan. He went down the road to a bank in Jefferson and got his loan. He moved there, started a business that has since gone international.
My truck was paid off a few months ago...my atv was paid off last week...my Topcon GTS was paid for in cash when I went into business...same as the rest of my equipment which I purchased new from Hayes....next step when works comes my way...GPS...yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
Congratulations!
if feels very liberating to make those final payments. now those paydays get even sweeter when you don't have to pay every equipment pusher in town. give 'em hell radar!
Way to go! We have a few more months on making the last on a huge note! Then we're in the same business as you.
I have heard lease quite a bit. Do you buy the equipment when the lease is up at a predetermined price or is it more like a rent to own type thing?
I'VE ASKED MR. CLEVELAND, BUT I'M GOING TO ASK THE REST OF YA'LL. HAS ANYONE GOTTEN A BUSINESS LOAN THROUGH EITHER A BANK OR THROUGH THE SMALL BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION, TO START A BUSINESS, AND IF SO WHAT WERE THE TERMS AND REQUIREMENTS TO SECURE THAT LOAN? THANK YOU.
