it??s been a stressful coupla weeks. first email this morning didn??t help. so I said ??screw it? and wrote back:
Show me the money.
pretty remarkable how many people seem to assume land surveyors are charity operations.?ÿ
guess it kinda makes sense of you also hold the assumption that we have magical powers that can make land disappear??
File the collection.?ÿ Screw them.
Don't let them screw you out of the money...... ???? ?????ÿ
?ÿ
I was kinda hoping for a photo of eggs over easy bacon and hash browns crisp.
?ÿ
I hate suing people for money, but have won every time, so they probably hate me more anyway...
I fired another client this week- one I inherited from my predecessor- after getting ambushed in a 20 person zoom meeting. Told them I??d finish this project out then they could go look for another surveyor for the first time in 20 years.
The most satisfying part has been telling them repeatedly this week how little all the sudden ass kissing is going to yield in return.
It amazes me how many clients somehow think paying their bill is somehow contingent on their project going through (sale or subdivision).

This logic makes a good argument for much higher fees.
Lien it before limitations are in place, like right now. Too bad if it pisses somebody off you do not need clients like that. ?????ÿ
Very well written, as polite and positive as possible while delivering a stern message.
@brad-ott Or a retainer.?ÿ I think that would be a hard pill around here though. Don't know unless you try though I guess...

Yes. ?ÿTry it. ?ÿLet me know how it goes. ?ÿ
EDIT:
Upon our receipt of this fully executed agreement and the retainer fee we will provide
professional land surveying services in accordance with Title 865, Article 1, Chapter 12 of the
Indiana Administrative Code for the above referenced project. The fee for this service is
$10,000 with a non-refundable retainer of half of the fee ($5,000) due at the time of execution
of this agreement.
Once we receive the above, we will then commence with the initial county records research &
field locations. Then we will provide the final certified survey drawing upon receipt of the
remaining balance ($5,000) due. We anticipate completing these services within 2 to 3 months
(weather dependent) of receipt of the initial retainer fee.
This survey will comply with the requirements and certificate wording provided by Title 865,
Article 1, Chapter 12 of the Indiana Administrative Code ~ (i.e. no lender specific requirements
or certificates). Any additional services required after we deliver the survey as a result of
comments from you, your lender, your buyer, your seller, any attorney, engineer, or otherwise
(??additional comments?) will be invoiced on an hourly basis at our current hourly rates.
@brad-ott Thanks!
We do what we call "corner search". Based on records (we are recording state) we see that corners were set in the past. We go out there and can't find anything. We bill for our time and notify the client. Then I hear "but you didn't find anything". We do tell them up front that there are no guarantees but they never seem to hear that part. Or we find only one corner and I hear "well can't you just set the others from that one".
This kind of stuff is why I don't want my bosses job. I couldn't deal with this kind of stuff without losing my cool.?ÿ
@350rocketmike?ÿ
lmao. Easily the worst part of sitting on the throne, as it were.?ÿ
