I just got off the phone with another surveyor that I have known for years. Earlier today he had been contacted by a residential developer that has been around for years, but rather inactive the last four or five.
The developer was trying to pick his brain about finding a good engineering firm to handle a 75 acre development. Everybody my buddy could think of was either dead or retired. He called me for input.
The conversation rolled on like this:
"What about old whats-his-name?"
"Sold out back in '07 to his son-in-law. They're all structural over there now."
"Is old numb-nuts still working?"
"Retired. His wife passed away and I heard he's in Phoenix."
"What about the Cheatham Group?"
"Sold out to an environmental outfit. They're out of the development game."
After all these years I guess I have no idea who's in the civil game around town. I'm sure there is a mess of them, but I don't know a soul anymore. Kind of an uncomfortable feeling.
I guess it's just another letter added to the "hand-writing-on-the-wall"...:-/

So, are you thinking that not knowing any engineers is a *bad* thing? :>

Any older dude that still can push his out-of-fuel motorcycle to the next gas bar is in pretty good shape in my books...
