So another trail project.
Still money for trails but not to fix potholes.....sigh!!
Trail is built behind the office as you head out of the city into rural lands, one stipulation for the city to acquire an easement is that a chain link fence be installed along the west easement line of the trail so you have to just go down the trail, barbed wire along the east line of the easement and chain link along the west side.
So it gets done, fence gets put up and I get a kinda nasty call from the city that cows are on the trail. Oh heaven forbid!!!!
The lands are leased west of the chain link fence for grazing. So how is it the rancher's problem, it's a FENCE OUT state, you don't want cattle then fence them out and build the fence so it works. And keep it maintained!!!! And close the gates!!!!
Those gates need padlocks!!!
And get some city workers down there and put them back pronto cause it's your fault not his, better hurry before they get out on the highway!!!!:-@
Why did they put in a nasty call to you? Are they your cows? And most importantly, did their owner pay the grazing fees for the trail easement????
Lol! We used to have a herd of red angus. Our neighbor had a herd of black angus. He also had a black angus bull that was really good at jumping fences. He was almost as good as a deer was. That bull spent a lot of time on our side of the fence that summer. The following year, our all red angus herd wasn't all red anymore. Lot of new born mixed black angus popped up in our herd....
The office property is where the easement was granted so they called here, the cows are on the trail because either the fence wasn't properly installed, or a city worker or trail walker opened a gate and didn't close it, there are three of them along the fence. So those will probably get padlocks, in this state you don't get to say keep your cows off me, you can fence them out but that's it. Since the trail of course doesn't have gates across it and both ends of it run into highways, it was lucky the cows didn't get on two of the busiest highways in the area.
On top of that people have been taking their dogs and some have got under the chain link fence cause it was poorly built and are out there chasing the cows, the rancher is fuming and told me today he's going shooting if it happens anymore.
Beyond that, the city hasn't kept to their agreement; installing signs where to park, tried to take more property than was granted, destroyed property corners and didn't install crossings properly, damaged the neighbors fence then tried to say that it was always that way even though we have photos taken during the construction showing it in good repair, just been a mess.
Yeah, it'd be one thing if there were bulls grazing back there, just some little cow calf pairs.
Like the rancher said, a three wire fence will hold those cows in.
The rancher needs to put some hot wire up right inside the chain link. That'll teach the people and dogs to stay out.
Ha!!
Probably it would!!
But doubtful he's going to, I think locking the gates and getting the chain link fence tied down better will do the most good.
You all knew I'd have a comment on this.
I love that fence out idea. Wish we had it here. It was that way in the very first few years of Statehood, then it got reversed.
The situation cited above could have been fatal for humans as well as bovines had the herd found their way to the main roads mentioned. Trail users are not known for being the sharpest knives in the drawer, if you know what I mean. If they had good common sense they wouldn't all be out running around in there underwear somewhere when there is work to be done on something important. This scenario reminds me of the old Far Side comic where the cows are standing on their hind legs and talking with each other about serious topics, when suddenly one of them yells, "CAR!" In the next panel they are on all four feet and munching grass.
one of the classics, fer sure!
