I'd report to the pope as long as he doesn't start threatening me with he11 for not having my expense reports stapled instead of paper clipped. o.O

Just because I'm paranoid, doesn't mean they aren't out to get me.

In my experience, managers don't report to secretaries. It's the other way around. Secretaries answer the phones and makes coffee. I don't get it.:-S

VG replies here.
She isn't a secretary but an administrative or executive assistant.
Word of advice, if you want to be treated with respect you must treat them with the same respect.

Owners need an employee to manage time and flow in their office.
Also they are aware that employees under stress can go postal.

Exactly right. And if you think of yourself as a "land stealer" I might say you have a low opinion of the profession as well.

Was hoping to hear some answers to these good questions from the OP, but maybe he is busy making coffee? (Just joking!).

I didn't give enough information in the original post.

Yes, the woman is a secretary.

I suppose "report" was the wrong word. What it amounts to now is that duties and responsibilities I have had for years have been taken away from me. I used to be able to make decisions about non-surveying related matters. Now I have to go through this person.

This woman is also the daughter of the boss. And she's a spy. Every little thing that goes on around here, no matter how trivial, gets reported to the boss.

In the original post, it sounds you have a good working relationship with the owner. See it as a simple restructuration. It appears that role and responsibilities are well-defined, that helps out everyone. Maybe the decision to take away some of your duties was made to help you focus on what your do best.

As far as the spy thing, not much of a concern if you are a professional. Report all you want, lady, got nothing to hide.

This reminds me of that Seinfeld episode when George hires an administrative assistant that end up making more money than him...how can this be sir, she is my subordinate?

Very annoying situation, but as long as it wasn't on survey-related matters it shouldn't pose a major issue. Especially since it's clear this is a position to groom her for running the company (or at least a portion) down the line. A little nepotism goes a long way.

The only potential problem would be if she was making decisions or restricting your decisions on survey-related matters. I had to deal with that about a year ago with an unlicensed party chief who was above me on the organization chart. Made for a couple of rough months until it got sorted out.

The day she is running this company is the day I quit, if I last that long. She's not capable of handling it.
