Received a post card from AT&T "An Important Message about the Privacy of your Customer Information (Customer Proprietary Network Information or CPNI)" full content of card is online at http://www.att.com/gen/privacy-policy?pid=22561 . This is a YOUR IN AND MUST OPT OUT offer/threat! I read online that some are getting this notice by email.

The card is a warning that 33 days after the notice was mailed they will make your CPNI information available to their marketing department and "AT&T authorized agents" to offer you additional products and services. That information is almost anything AT&T knows about your online, email, wireless or voice over IP habits. I presume the authorized agents will be any cell phone, computer manufacturer or service provider that AT&T cuts a marketing deal with.

Timing is wonderful also just before Christmas when most will trash the card/message as advertisement without reading anything.

I've had basic budget residential AT&T (the company formerly known as Southwestern Bell in my location) for 30+ years. Added basic DSL about ten years ago.

A few years back I started getting frequent marketing calls trying to upsell me to call waiting, ID etc. After two or three times of saying politely no thank you in a couple of months I told the person on the end if I got another call trying to sell me something I had already said I wasn't interested in I would start looking for another service provider (and this was before cell phones took off to be primary phones). Got so sorry sir I'll mark your "file." Since then maybe one or two calls. Made the same threat and the calls stopped.

Since I have a "relationship" with AT&T they aren't bound by the no call rules but if they sell my contact information to someone I don't have a direct relationship with and they call then I believe that does violate the no call rules.
