They want their business model to reflect $1K per year per seat period (C3D).
Dear Valued Customer,
Beginning February 1st, 2013, Autodesk will change its current upgrade pricing structure. Autodesk currently offers multiple upgrade paths based on which previous product release is being upgraded. These upgrade paths will be consolidated into a single "Upgrade from Previous Releases" option, which will be available to customers using products one to six releases prior to the current release.
With this change, there will be one upgrade price, which will increase to 70% of the purchase price of the current Full License SRP*. AutoCAD and AutoCAD based products version 2007 and older, will lose their trade-in value starting February 1st, 2013. Now through January 31st, 2013 will be your last chance to upgrade licenses older than version 2008.
Autodesk Subscription customers will continue to receive software upgrades as long as they continue to renew their Subscription.
Customers who do not renew their Subscription by their contract expiration date have the option to late renew 364 days after expiration date. A late renewal order does not change the original contract end date and an additional $100 late fee per expired license is required by Autodesk. After this 364 day grace period, licenses will move into the "Upgrade from Previous Releases" option.
They'll get not a penny out of me because I have no intention of upgrading, now or later. I like the version I have, it does everything I want, and there cannot possibly be enough improvements to justify an upgrade.

The problem with that solution - which is quite valid for a solo operator - comes in when you (that is, not you Bruce, but rather you in the general sense) need to add seats when personnel are added. The old version of C3d that existing staff are using can't be bought. So, in a growing company, you end up with various staff using different vintages of the program.
Bruce,
I said that about Softdesk/ACAD 14 on a Winblows 98 machine. Things change. 🙂

My Intellicad keeps looking better and better (even if it is a little buggy).

This appears to be just another nudge to drive users to the subscription model. Although I don't like paying the $500 or so it costs me every year to subscribe, it's worked out better for me than the every-three-years-or-so upgrade approach.

$500 ???
Our subscription has cost us just under a grand every year for at least the last 10 years...from Land Desktop through C3d.

My subscription is for straight AutoCAD.
See, I knew there was a reason I never liked those scum sucking parasites, make a product that is ridiculously difficult to use and then want even more just to maintain what you already have.
I will spend the money for Carlson and Intellicad, will be a cold day before Autodesk gets a penny from me.

Doh! I didn't consider you've been using vanilla AutoCad.
I neglected to mention in my first post that I've been satisfied with my ROI. FWIW, I've observed greedy parasites over the last couple of decades...in the form of countless users of pirated SW.

This is exactly why Robert Walker resigned from AutoDesk so long ago...
