Nice pictures!!
For a fun weekend, some go hunting, some go fishing..... ??ÿ
What is the reason for the pole alongside the tripod, instead of using a tribrach and have the tripod centered on the mark??ÿ Is to keep it "fixed height", when you don't have a dedicated fixed height tripod?

Yes- fixed height with more versatility- and easier on the budget- plus this set up is a lot easier to set up than dancing with a fixed height tripod especially on uneven ground or with monuments that project significantly out of the ground- we get 8 minute bubbles and?ÿchange out the 40s that come on the rods. The hold a pole rod holder is a better option than the stedi-rest because the hole goes all the way thru and the center screw can be tightened down even- the closed hole on the stedi-rest doesn't work too well on our tri-max legs because the ?ÿscrew bottoms out before the unit is tight against the tripod head.?ÿ Hold-a-pole is $20, Rod is $80, bubble is $40, tripod is $350 vs $800+ for a fixed height...
I copied that design, made the pole holder piece, and adapted a telescoping pole from somewhere by putting holes for a pin to make either 2.000 or 2.500 meters. Cost was under $10 (not counting the 5/8 tap I already had).
I?ÿveerrry carefully check plumb by holding a level against all sides of the pole. Horizontal is probably good to several mm but vertical to 1 mm.?ÿ?ÿ
I'm doing GPSonBM where vertical is most important so if there is ANY risk of settling I use this rig.
If horizontal is critical I would use a tribrach.
