Just to clarify things, when these folks are talking about their "oil and gas initiatives", they are not talking about the NY City metropolitan area.
Chances are they are operating in Western NY (South of Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse, or in the Delaware River area, west of the Catskills. For those who might be concerned, you wouldn't be anywhere near NYC.
The Marcellus Shale area is expected to provide ten trillion cubic meters of natural gas, enough to supply the entire US demand for over a decade, assuming it can be "fracked" out. So there's a lot of work going on now, and more coming.
In addition, all that construction is going to create a lot of infrastructure expansion (and damage), so it seems as if there's going to be a lot of work up there.
The NY State Association will be having a webinar about this subject:

Under the NYS DEC regulatory plan all well locations will need extensive mapping signed by a NYS Surveyor before any permits are issued. I also received the email. Looks like we know who has a connection for these contracts. Good opportunity for a surveyor who wants to get a peice of this boom.
