I'm thinking it's a Barred Owl.

Did you happen to get a chance to hear him "hoot"?

I'm not a birder but I vote Barred Owl. I believe they make the "who, who cooks for you" call. I don't know if their migration has begun or it's mating season or what but for some reason last week I saw a lot of owls and they were all acting strange. I approached one in my utv standing in a dirt turnrow and he did not want to move. I stopped a hundred feet short and watched it constantly spin and turn it's head frantically. I passed others perched on the side of the road in close proximity and they too held their ground. This all happened mid to late day. It was strange enough I told my wife about it.

Neat picture by the way.

I don't think I've ever heard an owl making any noise during the day, but I'll bet a couple of hours later, after twilight, it was a regular hootenanny.

The woods at my grandfather's place on the Trinity River were full of hoot owls. He use to say they were saying, "She cooks for me, who cooks for YOU?"
