Hello All,

The Massachusetts Building Code was changed a few years ago to get a bit closer to the International Building Code. Great.

'They' have defined a Wind Borne Debris Region as being 1 mile from Coastal Mean High Water. There is a reference for a survey if you have a property that is close to the 1-mile mark per the jpg of a GIS map. No downloads for the data, just a poor quality jpg embedded in a PPT.

It is very obvious that the Coastal Mean High Water does not simply follow the Mean High Water as several embayments are outside of the zone. It does look like the Mean High Water located within Velocity Zones are the starting point, but this may not be the case.

I tried looking into this back when the code was changed, but I gave up only to pick it up again today... Any thoughts or knowledge?

[sarcasm]You would think that they have a Google Earth KMZ file...[/sarcasm]

GIS CARTOON

The coastal mean high water line, in the Massachusetts 110 mph wind zones, forms the outer edge of the red bands overlaid onto the satellite images found on the MA Department of Public Safety website at www.mass.gov/dps. For estimating purposes only, the inner edge of the red bands is approximately one mile inland from coastal mean high water. To determine whether a building is in a wind borne debris region, the building official shall use a survey, provided with the permit application and the building plan, which indicates the distance, in feet, from the location of the proposed building to the closest location of the coastal mean high water line as described above.

Yup, i've gone through that powerpoint, but it still does not share with me the basis of Coastal Mean High Water vs. Mean High Water. I could not find a KMZ file. I have a call in that was not returned...yet.
