Got the chance to watch some equipment cross the road. Decided it might make a cool gif.

What say you?

Larry,

That is pretty cool. I have never seen a contractor put down something to protect the road.

They were crossing 7th Street Road just east of Lumberton.

As for the stuff protecting the road, makes total sense to me. They put down sheets of plywood, throw some old tires on top of that. After the equipment is across the road, they remove the tires and use the plywood to scrap any dirt off the road. Very slick way to manage the process and it takes very little time for the whole thing to happen.

Keeps the Grousers from damaging the asphalt road surface. State highway dept wanted all who cross with a crawler to do the same, I didn't because it was safer not to block the hwy with tires when I could not do it quickly alone nor have flagman slowing traffic. When I needed to cross with my D6, I picked my times when the asphalt was not soft or brittle and did any steering changes before getting on the highway, and I waited until I was off of it to make any more turns, tracks sliding sideways will leave marks in asphalt.

Ahhh ok...makes sense. The trash truck that comes up our hill left a bunch of perfectly lined scrapes in the asphalt that go all the way down the hill when he had on the snow chains during last years big snowstorm. The city has never filled them in. 😐

I've never seen that on roads, but I've seen it on a private crossing of the CN Rail mainline right close to Edmonton here...
