Was looking at getting a Vernier Transit because I thought it looked interesting with all the knobs and slides. Most of these selling on the *bay are located in India. Most of those sold outside of India are replicas.
What's with India & the Vernier Transit?
Most of the replicas are made in India.?ÿ
I stalk ebay quite a bit. I hsve yet to see a transit, compass or similar item come out of India that wasn't fake. Some of them look cool but as an investment they are worth scrap brass price.
One might say that India is the China of vernier transit artistic reproductions.?ÿ ?????ÿ
ebay is loaded with fake/knock-off items.?ÿ Whenever I buy or sell on there it's US locations only.
I have never sold anything on ebay.... I would be too slow with the shipping.
that said I do purchase worldwide regularly, and have had Zero problems.
If it comes from China or Hong Kong it is a bit slow.
other than that I consider it the same as buying anything sight unseen, from a total stranger.
a few weeks ago I bought a 16TB HDD, it was dead on arrival (+/- $350).
I asked for a return, it was handled promptly with a prepaid return FedEx label, and the money (every penny) was back in my PayPal account within 24 hours of them receiving it.
long story short: @jonathan50
if you want a simple open transit, with a compass, in a wooden box, with a 3.5" thread tripod.... mine needs to go.
it's kinda funky, but it cleans up well

I have never sold anything on ebay
I've sold a couple dozen items on eBay, and can attest that the buyer is heavily favored under eBay rules.?ÿ One item I sold as "not working, for parts only" with a no-returns policy.?ÿ The buyer decided he didn't want it, and eBay required me to accept the return and pay for return shipping.?ÿ Sheesh!
How badly does that transit need to go? I'm a hoarder. Mostly books so technically I'm a bibliophile. As a surveyor I have the typical trinkets in the office, but still lacking a vernier transit....
I rarely go more than a few weeks without buying something on Ebay. They do treat buyers well. I had one kid try to rip me off and Ebay made sure I got a full refund. A few other misunderstandings but the sellers made it right fast. Point being you are spot on. Ebay is a buyers market..
I have no idea of the value. It's a Gurley, no idea what the model is. serial number 660258.
kinda rough, oxidation, but could be cleaned up and used.
http://www.surveyhistory.org/how_old_is_my_gurley1.htm says it might be a 1966 vintage.
send me a PM or email, I can grab some photos...
