So since my Leica MS50 was destroyed (frame bent, circuit board broken, radio handle broken) it's just taking up space in my office. My distributor offered me $500 for it...

Whats it worth?

I'm sure it depends on whether he's offering $500 trade-in value, or $500 cash-on-the-barrelhead. A lot of times they offer more on a trade-in (I suspect) just to get your business.....kind of like the car dealer advertising $2,000 for any care that you can push, pull, or drag in.

I can't answer your question, just thought I would suggest to tell everyone whether it's being offered as a trade-in or not.

I woulda thought you would need it as evidence against the dirtbags that took it. I guess pictures and reports suffice. If there is anything salvageable it my save you some money later on, maybe not.

Having another same instrument in office, the broken unit is for spare parts from boards to emitters, knobs, lens, laser unit and keypads, etc.

Unbroken, the tribrach is worth $250+

Otherwise, it is an expensive paperweight.

That is 10 times the amount I was offered for a supposedly destroyed instrument last year. After a conversation with the tech and he found out the case around the scope was removed, it got fixed for $275.

My robotic instrument I was told was worth nothing. 0. Zilch. They send it back to me. Wouldn't even give me 50 bucks for parts.

Value is dependent on usability / salability of the parts, which is largely a function of the instrument's market popularity. It's pretty easy to find a home for S6 parts...MS50's are much newer to the market, so a lot fewer knockovers or failed guns to fix...plus most that are out there are still under warranty so Leica is buying those parts. I might give you more...call me (phone number's in my username) and we can discuss.

I would say that right now it is work about the price of the case and the tribrach, it that is still good. In about 10 years, when Leica is out of them, it might have some value as parts. Until that point I can not imagine a service tech would put the used parts in an instrument while new ones are available. That was my experience with an 1103 that had a similar fate right out of the box. I was hoping to utilize the power search from the unit I was demoing in our 1103. The dealer gave me the carcass in fact. Take the $500 and run.

So far it's worth $500, which is $500 more than I would give for it!
