Glad you asked.

if you had said, "why, that's obviously a poor man's laser plummet!"
you'd have been quite correct.

We had set the monument boxes the last week in September, when I had enough manpower, to complete the operation, but didn't have my final positions for the two corners- these are the "magnetically detected" positions from a few weeks back. I knew I was good to a tenth so - as I said we set the boxes and drove on.

this week I went back down to set the mons- by myself- the crew is scattered to the 4 winds putting out fires-

i'd known ahead of time that it would be a pain to set and mark the monuments deep in the box- So I thought i'd prestamp everything I could then put the
.
.
DIMPLE

on after the thing was in and solid.

I thought a laser plummet would be sweet, because if you have a pole on the cap and try to mark it in the box it would be difficult.

I considered buying a laser plummet, but I had PO's my boss earlier in the week and didn't feel like begging for spending authority, plus it would be a pretty much one time use for me since I'm red/green color blind.

so I was driving down to Hamilton contemplating my slight predicament- and viola' (sp).

I stopped at the near by construction office and got 2 labels- and drew the grid on there- I used my motel key for a straight edge....

After prestamping the year and my PLS no. I went down town- not quite Willem Dafoe and Brad Johnson- but as enthusiastically as I figured the situation warranted-

I set up my Traffic control and mobed everything out to the intersection. I cut open the tops of the monboxes- we duct tape them shut when we are finishing the concrete to keep from sealing them shut. and looked inside- there was a divot in the subgrade from when we'd set the box and my measurement said it was within .05'

subgrade is 1.1 ft below the top lip of the box-

I put the breaker point on the thunderbolt and attempted to make a pilot hole-
and hit a stinkin' rock- I thought an unkind thought for a minute then broke thru the rock with the tool.

The caps are Berntsen 3.25" ac- we put them on a 3/4"X24" rebar, so I turned it over and drove the rebar into the cap then drove it down with a deadblow hammer, til it was out of reach then used a piece of 2x4 to finish driving.

I dumped in some chips and rodded them a bit to make it tight and keep things fairly free draining- then I whipped out my label- oriented it to north and stuck it on.

Then I set up a std tripod and tribach- positioned it over the corner- sited down at the grid- and using the ever-present dimple device, got 'er done.

It has been said

Looks like the dimple is 0.04' off....

I been thinking about having some markers made for the dimple crew. They would be similar except it would have a grid or characters and numbers stamped in all over the top. Then instead of punching it you'd just select your character and note it in the record.

Another thought is the Punch Mark Subdivision. A complete subdivision drawn with corners punched on a single 4 inch diameter survey cap. We could auction the lots and donate the cash to BeerLeg.

Here's the way I do it:

Custom-build tripod, Leica SNLL121, 4' aluminum rule to layout (and tie back from) 2' concrete nail straddlers, sandbags to hold the rule in place. Works pretty slick, even in deep holes.

Note the semi-circular cutout in the rule, an artifact from the time before I bought the laser plummet. It's centered on the 2' mark on the rule, and is the same diameter as one of my prism poles. I'd set the pole up on the point using a pole tripod, then lay the rule against it for tieout. Reverse the process for tie-in. The laser is a much better solution, if a bit pricey.

Should have set it right in the 1st place!

A pipe dream...

Sweet dreams!

Interesting perspective there, jr-

but maybe until you have a number and grown a pair big enough that allows you to set something that meets minimum statutory requirements, you should just hide and watch.
