What if you woke up tomorrow and your professional license disappeared through no fault of your own.....just vanished.

I would be in bad shape.

My licenses are my lifeblood. With out them I would just be another construction staker (you can do that without a license here in GA), and their ain't much business in construction layout where I am right now. Plus my billable rate would be cut in more than half.

Wouldn't really bother me, I think things are way over regulated. I do believe there is a subset of land surveying that should be regulated but only the legal boundary stuff dealing with lay public. All the other construction/measurement stuff would do fine unregulated. Just make them pay big for any damages due to bad work.

A license should legitimately protect the public not the licensee. In my view the public doesn't included businesses, contractors, title companies or government.

Since I work in FL I guess I will find out soon.

Luckily I voted for Obama so I won't have to worry about putting gas in my car and I won't have to worry about paying my mortgage. I helped him now he is going to help me.

That would require either regulation (gasp!) or legal action. The average consumer can't afford this country's "justice" system. Construction stakeout is already exempt from licensure in NY.

Which is preferable? Reasonable regulation IMHO.

Yes Rick, but even though it is exempt from licensure how do you get E&O insurance without a license? I think if anybody needs insurance it is a construction layout company.

That can easily be covered by commercial liability insurance and bonding, which is easily specified per project.

When my dad first started a surveying business, before licensure was required, that is how he handled that particular problem.
