Working on a large construction project in DC area about 140 miles from the Epicenter of the recent 5.8 earthquake. The question was asked what we were going to do about the EarthQuake and our Control. How much did it move did it go back to same spot etc. I basicly laughed when i recieved this email. Maybe I am just simple minded but I find it hard to believe that there would be any measuable movement being so far away of course unless there is obvious structual damage to a structure. My stance of it as of right now is as long as it still checks good there should be nothing to worry about. My question is should I be concerned or continue to chuckle.

Easy answer. Trust but verify. After any event whether it's an earthquake or a deep frost.

Gotta agree with Deral.

If they are worried about it, re-run your control loop, and bill them for it. They'll have the peace of mind that it is still good, and you'll get a little billable time for it, AND the comfort level that it is still good.

We were in the middle of a big project when the 2001 Nisqually Quake hit. We had made a route map and were getting ready to do the layout when a 6.8 Earthquake hit the area. They didn't want to pay to make the map again so we were told to just 'wing' it.......:-|

Some of the control was out more than half a foot, when you did a back-sight check or checked another point, so we tried to keep it as local as we could. Nobody complained too much, when things didn't quite fit as planned.

The job was for force main sewer, and water lines so it wasn't like it needed to be to tight, as long as they could maintain minimum cover and separation.

The route went from a connection on I-5, down the Parkway, through the Park, across the bridge and into Downtown, a total of about 2 miles.

It was a fun project, for about 3 years...;-)

Cheers,
Radar

NGS is evaluating any motion that may have resulted from the "event" using the region CORS data. We hope to be able to post the results shortly.
